Black Madonna

Tue 09 Jun 2026, 22:03

Im a little lost with the black Madonna. It os not written in a fashion that lends itself to a scenario, with events and clues and series of encounters. Its nothing more than some set piece locations withloose suggested forces.

I expect more from a scenario, specifically clues for the pcs to pick up on. Nowhere in the info printed does any patticular contact indicate where the black madonna might be. The diary suggests a castle, but im not sure its specific enough (there are lots of castles) for players to follow.

Also the cave isnt on the map, so how exactly are they supposed to find it?

As a GM i would have liked a summary of people who know specific info, how to meet them, and suggestions on how to come by the secret info.

None of that is present.

Suggest that in the future stick to established scenario outlines.
Each npc should have a list of info they know, what they are willing to trade for it, and or how difficult they are to persuade.
An encounter at the popes crashed helicopter is a missed opportunity here too. Clues there might lead pcs to suspect he is alive and in hiding.

Finally, there are notes that suggest the black madonnas value, but not specific, i fact none of the gear in the rules are given values….. and theres a misprint on the barter table, fuel is listed twice, but one should be food.

IIRC, the original 1e Black Madonna module answers at least some of the questions that you have. There's also a fan-made supplement called Expanding the Black Madonna which sounds promising (I haven't looked at it, so I don't know for sure, but I've seen examples of the author's other work and it's usually pretty good). Both are available in PDF form on DrivethruRPG. Used copies of the original module are floating around out there too.

Black Madonna is a "priceless" item. Historical painting, religious value and alos a bit like the declaration of independence.

Bobolice-Mirow castle is the location IIRC.

Players really have to work off crensaw's diary notes/map and confide in locals.

I have a priest character ("quantum troll/ogre") that is put into their path just after they get the diary. He has knowledge of the painting/chalice and can point PCs in right direction (or at least give possible couple castles it might be). Priest can be leading refugees on road, or the first location or scenario site they go to. Priest can allude to pope by going "the chalice was last seen at monestary with the painting. We thought it lost when the pope's helicopter was shot down two years ago.

I guess you could have a pope's helicopter crash site too, though two years is a long time for any clues to be weathered away or stripped out of site.

Crenshaw cave is where you want it to be. :) Just like the priest, the players run into it.
