Regarding an armor's lifespan

Would it be reasonable to assume that the type of armor a PC is wearing shouldn't last indefinitely and should have a lifespan? If so, how would one

calculate it? Should the amount of hits a piece of armor can take equal the amount of gold it costs to buy it....? I would assume that an armor's lifespan

would only apply when the damage exceeds the armor rating. Also, would an armor's lifespan depend on where, concerning

the body, an enemy hit the player character? For example, if a skeleton slashed at a PC's abdomen in one round of combat, and then at the PC's

head the next, would one separate the suit of armor and the helmet's lifespan, or combine them?

Armor having a limited lifespan can work, but it’s usually simpler to reduce durability only when damage exceeds its rating and only track separate pieces if your system already uses hit locations.
