Mass Combat Ideas?
Posted: Sat 15 Nov 2025, 16:53
My campaign seems to run ahead of the release schedule for Free League modules; I ran the Krakow setting (all based on the 1e books) before Urban Operations was released, the Vistula journey before Hostile Waters came out, and now it looks like I will be doing a mass combat in Warsaw well before Op:Reset gets released.
Any ideas then, on how to handle mass combat in this game? I came up with a basic idea of using units of X number of troops, assigning them scalable stats based on unit size, and then modding those stats for conditions like Unit Morale, what eqipment they have (Armour, Artillery, etc), and then comparing that to the opposing force. Should be solvable with just a few die rolls.

Sounds like a good idea!
I'd try to add some kind of bonus to each side depending on the Command attribute for each side. Maybe affected by the total Tactician specialities on both sides?

Yeah, I think that's a good idea too, using Specialties to add a bonus to a roll. I'll spend a little time writing this up this weekend, maybe, and see if what I come up with makes even a little sense.

I havent done anything like a mass combat, and the campaign I was gamemastering ended because one player had to move to another country and another had a new kid. Life doing its thing.
But in my campaign things were kind of escalating to some big confrontation as my players liked the idea of more conflict.
What I was thinking on doing was using one of the cold wars wargames I have as a Mass Combat set of rules. Treating anything directly related to the players using the regular RPG rules and anything else with the wargame rules. One of the players was the commander/leader type, so I was planning on allowing him to make rolls to directly control some of the units during the combat, but mostly things were going to be more fluid and descriptive, not necessarily stoping the game to play another game.
I was planing on using one of the following:
MicroArmor: Modern (by GHQ models), with GHQ models and model terrain, this would be the most visually appealing, but changig the scale as 1 vehicle = 1 model instead of platoon scale.
GDW Team Yankee, this one would be very practical.
WEG Air Cav, this was more detailed and the detection rules means a more tense game of cat and mouse may be played, at the cost of a more complex system to handle by a GM.

Team Yankee and Air Cav both have merits. Team Yankee has a lot of support and allows more freeform movement and more detailed info while Air Cav retains hexes for a more T:2k4e feel and generic class tokens so you don't need to get all of the different models. Warning regarding Team Yankee: Soviet armor is intentionally improved over what has been historically observed. This was done intentionally for the sake of keeping the game scale balanced at NATO CO vs. Soviet BN rather than NATO CO vs. Soviet BDE. This may or may not fit what you want out of a mass combat system. (FWIW, I want to get blow up the maps to 10x so I can use Team Yankee minis instead of tokens in regular games.)

Yes, the newer Team Yankee miniatures game may also work, I was planning on using the older, counter and hexes GDW, Team Yankee though.

Quite affordable, and on itself a nice game of the era.
