Skirmish Rules

What is everyone’s experience with the Evolved Edition Skirmish rules?

Some things I observed:
-From someone who played a few different table top games if found the need for zones a little abstract. Now I think the best solution for this is for there to be two guidelines, either "Zone play" for maps that have already have zones determined, like Hopes Last Day and Rupture Protocol, and have an inch or centimeter option. I think having the "3" measurement systems, Inch/Metric/Zones, co-existing would lead to ease of play.

-List Building is... clunky? I think that most equipment and specialties could be merged together, at least for Colonial Marines it makes sense as we have all the subclasses in the CMON. I feel like the current system works because the lack of flavor? It would be nice if there was a make a character in the RPG rules then adapt/translate them to the Skirmish rules.

-Scenarios, the provided 3 sound fun, but I could not find a way to play them without having the physical retail copy of the Rupture Protocol Maps. Possible solution would be some Printer Friendly Maps? Some generic scenarios would be nice too, ones that are not map dependent or team dependent.

All in all I think it’s a great rough draft of some decent rules, which just need a little more refinement.

On another note do we think that the Skirmish Rules needs its own board alongside General and GM Only? I think we could use it for FAQ and errata as well as discuss potential improvements and most importantly our experiences playing Alien RPG: Skirmish Rules.

Hi SgtFrosty (like you name by the way), as for me, I'm waiting for the latest version of the BETA PDF (which will be the final version before the official printing this fall (for a book release in fall or winter (early 2026)). I've read Beta 1. I haven't fully read Beta 2. I'm waiting for the final Beta 3 so I can get started and transfer the rules from my game-table to it.

P.S. I might keep some rules from the 1st Edition Corerules, I don't know yet.

I'm not sure yet about the Evolved Edition Skirmish rules. I'll get back to you when I've read the final version and thought about the question. Others may be able to answer and already have an idea on the subject. Your observations are interesting nonetheless.

Arthur.

As for me, the only issue is with the "Zone" style movement. I've been playing many different skirmish games mostly GW ones since my happy teen days, yes sadly I'm an old fella now. And I must say that the movement in any tabletop game regardless the size ( 40k / AoS / ToW / Kill Team / Warcry etc. ) or even a board game (Aliens - Another Glorious Day in a Corps) is so crucial that it can even decide who is going to win, lose, survive or die in the game. As much as I'm an enormous fan of Alien Universe and skirmish games, I changed the movement in Alien skirmish game by applying Kill Team movement rules in inches in my personal games ofcourse. That way it made the game much more playable and fair for me plus the game could be played on an open space mat with scatter terrain etc. around.

Alien RPG Skirmish game is really good one and it has a nice potential to be even better. To me, if lads who created this game could make a new "movement" rules that would be possible to apply on any kind of mat with whatever terrain on it, that would be just great. I'm looking forward to some updates of the rules and to the second adventure in Jeremiah Saga. Hopefully we will get more miniatures !

P.S I'm sorry for writing any names of other skirmish games, but I did it not to promote any of them, but rather to show what can be done with the movement by removing the "Zones".

All the best !

Malezar, you should explain your own house rules for "Kill Team Movement rules in inch"... I'm interested to know that... I'm a veteran gamer myself. Share them with us if you want, with details.

Hey Arthur!
In that case, the KT rules are going to be a piece of cake for you :D
Basically I decided to treat "number of zones per point of speed" from Alien Skirmish game as Kill Team's APL (Action Points Limit). For instance during the activation of a certain character in Alien Skirmish game, they can move one zone in Stealth Mode. In combat a character can make an additional second move called "sprint". Therefore, a character can move up to two zones max.

Instead of that I gave human/android characters a "movement range" as a normal action plus a "dash" as a sprint action like in Kill Team Skirmish game. The movement range was tricky to decide, because in KT there are many races and factions. But regular humans/guards etc always move 6 inches. So I copied that. And Dash (as a Sprint) gives additional 3 inches of movement in combat.

As for Xenomorphs I copied the "range" from the Aliens Another Glorious day in a Corps Board Game which is also 6 inches. However Xenomorphs have 2 points of speed in Alien Skirmish game and are really fast, so they can move twice 6 inches per point of speed. That brings us to12 inches of movement. The idea is the same as in Alien Skirmish game, Xenomorphs will always be faster than human/android characters and they can move max as twice as them.

To sum it up:
- Human / Android Characters move 6 inches normally or 9 inches if they want to Sprint (Sprint is allowed only in Combat).
- Xenomorphs move 12 inches (6 inches per point of Speed).

Anyways these "house rules" aren't perfect but they really worked out even on open mats with random scatter terrains. If perhaps we could have a calculated movement range in inches by adding Agility and Mobility together then some characters would move slowly and some pretty fast. I'd love to hear what you Artur and anyone else think of it and If you guys have better ideas for the movement in Alien Skrimish game, please don't hesitate to share them.

I actually have a question for Tomas (site admin). Would that be possible that people who created Alien Skirmish game, could show a tutorial game with explanation of the rules, especially the movement ones on YouTube? I'm not sure if he's going to see this post but it's worth a try :D

All the best!

Just remember: A zone is about 25m of open space, or 15m of somewhat cluttered space, or 10m of machinery...
And I'll note that the 25m "zone" is conceptually the same as the Classic Traveller 25m range band...

A single zone move can thus be 25m. It's what I'm using in the VTT... for the cluttered, I've not needed to account for it as my players use shift-click to go around the clutter...

Hey Aramis, I hear you. I know these rules, and they are perfect for RPG session at the table or on Roll20, Foundry and Alchemy. I just tried them in a skirmish game on the table with miniatures and here is a thing. I don't know if that is in our "skirmish gaming" nature, but players tend to bend some rules to their own advantage or make own rules. Seen that before. Therefore with movement measured in inches in Alien Skirmish Game, I found out that it's easier to control the movement, especially in an open space. But if "Zones" work for other people, that's absolutely fine, happy days. But because I played other skirmish games before, therefore zones unfortunately don't work for me to keep the movement fair and balanced :( Anyways I would love to see an update to the rules.

Cheers
