Fallout, Daddy Abandonment Issues and personal growth through RPG

Me being me, I have made a lot of changes to Fallout, fixing some WTF's and adapting it to my personal GM style. One of the biggest changes is adding the Kezia character (Captain Dagny's daughter). I got this from my research, which led me to @ArthurDallas old play report. Dunno if that was an ArthurDallas original, but that character is IMO an EXCELLENT addition. For a lot of reasons.

In my version, the Kezia character is not resentful of her dad, but looking to prove herself to him. And to everyone else around her. She has had time to try to get over her mother's death. When her Dad finally shows up to take custody (like he promised he would!), Kezia doesn't see this as an opportunity to grind her axe against him in resentment of his long absence, but as an opportunity to leave her grief behind. To start again. To leave everything in her life that has been bad, in the rear view mirror.

The key characteristic of my Kezia is BOLD. She might be new to Space, but now that she is here, she wants you to know that she is here. She's got this. You old spacetimers are gonna be AMAZED at how fast she learns this shit.

In my mind, it is entirely possible that what Kezia is doing here, is not 100% healthy from a psychotherapy perspective. She is totally embracing this new adventure into space with a newly reunited Dad. She has probably exaggerated in her mind that this 'fresh start' will solve all her problems and that she will never ever EVERY need to look back again. But, that is what she is doing.

Along the way, of all my obsessive noodling over this character, I have noticed that some of this energy I am putting into this Kezia character, is reflective of my own shit that I am going through at this time. I have stopped myself from writing another 500 words about what this Kezia character and I have in common. I will just ask you to take it on faith that I have found a new expression of some of my deepest unheard feelings, just by trying to breathe life into this fictional figment of a person. Kezia is feeling a surge of empowerment in a new environ. A feeling that is as of yet, unearned and untested by the force of reality.

OK, that is deep enough. I choose to stop typing now. Selah.

PS: I did run Fallout for 3 players tonight. For one of them, it was their first RPG experience ever. I gave her Kezia as a character. She had an absolute blast. Final Girl and sole survivor like a Boss (although I think she might have some regrets about leaving her facehugged daddy behind). More therapy sessions in her future LOL!

I'll have to check, but I actually think it's a character I created. The name Kezia comes from the actress Kezia Burrows, who plays Amanda Ripley in the game Alien Isolation. That's my kind of reference for that kind of thing.

The details you add to the character (which you've developed further) make me think of Amanda Ripley. We're not far from a certain truth about her if Kezia has traits similar to Amanda Ripley. She's a fighter.

I'll check all that out tonight to see if it's indeed one of my invented characters, but I think so.

Good job Tliciousx.

The Kezia character is so perfect for a new player to RPG. She doesn't really know what she is doing, but she has a desire to prove that she can handle herself and show her worth to the more experienced characters. This lets the new player know that it is totally OK to look to more experienced players in doubtful situations, but also to be motivated to be bold and try taking the initiative.

Honestly, Kid characters are always the funnest to write for.

It's funny how similar the worlds are... when I was younger... 25 years ago... I played D&D, and new players were given Hobbit characters so they could learn the game without having to do too many technical tasks... Veteran players had wizards or clerics because they had spells to learn and use at the right time. Paladins and fighters were given to players with some experience. Often, a veteran leader played a paladin or a ranger. New players always played Hobbits or thieves of another race... ahahahahah!

Ran Fallout a couple times at convention. Noticed both times that Kezia's skills are VASTLY overshadowed by Myra. Also noticed that the team does not have great Manipulation. Think I will re-tool my version of the Kezia character in that direction, give her more of an edge and more options for the player.
