Hey everyone!

Have a question. Just started reading Hostile Waters and have a question about fuel consumption. Maybe I haven't understood something, but it looks like fuel consumption for vessels is much more higher than for vehicles. For example Inflatable boat has FUEL CONS 5, while HMMWV has only 3 and Soviet BTR has 6. I've have some experience in boat fishing and pretty sure that boat engine consumes much less fuel. Furthermore it often consumes less than more civil vehicles. So maybe I've missed something, because consuming 5 litres for 10 kilometres sounds ridiculous.

From my (granted, very limited) experience, boats consume more fuel than cars.

And a quick google search reveals that boats generally consume four times more fuel than the average car.

And that makes sense... propeller driven propulsion is less effective than wheel driven propulsion... more rotations per meter, so to speak.

EDIT: It might make more sense to you if you convert it to fuel per hour instead of fuel per km, since most boating is calulated that way. I mean, 5 liters for 10 km might sound wrong, but if that's 5 liters for 5 hours, it might sound more reasonable.

Thanks for your answer. I looked for more info and have found that info in Hostile Waters is pretty correct. Maybe it is slightly overstated, especially for diesel engines, but mostly it is fine.

Of course, in the case of small boats (and engines) the current and load also play a huge role.

P.S. I didn't take into account that my experience in fishing was mainly in small bodies of water, and most of the time we were standing.
