Troll Singer and favored cantrips

Wed 01 Jan 2025, 22:03

Maybe this topic has been covered already or maybe its an oversight/I'm just not understanding this. I recently created a Trollsinger character and noticed that they get favored cantrips. Per the dawn singer rules for all Trollsingers they do not get temporary corruption nor do they get permanent corruption from cantrips. Having favored cantrips with no tradeoff (like an increased amount of favored spells) seems like a major oversight for the class, especially when they take on the most risk for casting spells in general due to the permanent corruption. I am the DM for the campaign and was wondering if there any suggested alternatives, like giving the character an increased number of favored spells as a way to balance this out. As an example something like 1/2 the amount of favored cantrips as additional favored spells rounded down? Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Re: Troll Singer and favored cantrips

Sorry for the delay in response, I wanted to be in a position to double-check the printed text to make sure neither of us had missed anything in the Player's Guide. Unfortunately, it does seem like I missed the implications of having favored cantrips do nothing for Troll Singers.

I have three suggestions as homebrew house rules, to help out with the issue:

A) Favored Grants More Options
In this house rule, when a Troll Singer favors a cantrip, they can choose to learn another cantrip they do not already know from the Troll Singer list.

This allows a Troll Singer to have more cantrips than any other mystic approach, although they will max out at three extra cantrips, because then there will be no more cantrips for them to learn.

B) Favored Grants Advantage/Disadvantage
In this house rule, when a Troll Singer favors a cantrip that has an attack roll, they receive Advantage on the roll. When they favor a cantrip that requires a saving throw, target of a favored cantrip have Disadvantage on the save.

This could be powerful for other traditions, but Troll Singers only have Minor Illusion and Vicious Mockery as relevant cantrips.

C) Favored Grants Additional Range
In this house rule, when a Troll Singer favors a cantrip that has a range greater than touch, it is doubled.

This is probably the most versatile option, since most of the cantrips on the Troll Singer list will benefit from it. There could be a bit of weirdness with a literal reading of the rule (e.g. for mage hand the range would be doubled, but the hand would still disappear once moved past 30 feet unless the GM takes this rule to mean all range-adjacent values are doubled.

I'm sorry that I don't have a better answer for you, but perhaps one of these options will appeal to you, or inspire another idea.

I'd offer a counter-opinion: Troll Singers risk (save vs.) corruption from levelled spells, but since they automatically succeed at the save-vs-Corruption for all cantrips, they don't need to favour specific cantrips - their benefit is "all cantrips are favoured".

Levelled spell:
  • favoured: Cha save with advantage
  • normal: Cha save
  • unfavoured: Cha save with disadvantage
All Cantrips:
  • Cha save and automatically succeed
That's better than most Mystics get for Cantrips.

Im so sorry that I hadn't checked back and seen these replies sooner! Thank you so much to the both of you for your suggestions and feedback! I am seriously considering the house rules that Mr. Rodgers suggested above. I do agree that it is a major benefit to Troll Singers to not gain temporary corruption from cantrips but they most certainly seem to take on some of the highest risk for casting all other spells favored or otherwise depending on stats. Again I thank you both so much for your input on the matter and am truly grateful. Sorry again for late response and happy gaming! Glad there are others out there who love the game! Hope free league keeps updating and releasing content for the game and on foundry! :)
