Can Kill Roll for Hunting Benefit from Gear?

So, my players are wondering if something like TRAP that gives +2 on HUNTING gives +2 on the roll to kill any prey found or if it's only +2 on the roll to find prey?

The rules doesn't specify, but I would say, it gives the hunter a bonus to kill it. The reason is that if you hunt with a bow, you don't get a bonus to your first roll (to find animals) but you use the bows bonus to down it, the same can be said with traps, you don't find animals more easily but you can capture it with it (and then you just kill with your knife).

But again, it isn't specified by the rules. I have a vague memory that this question has popped up before, but I can't find it so I don't know what Tomas said then. It hardly would break the game if you give the trap bonus to both find the animals and to "down it".

Your first roll on hunting lets you roll potentially multiple times on the "what did we find?" table, and half of those animals can't be caught with traps, so it therefore makes no sense that the quality of your trap should apply to the first roll. The rules say this is a Survival roll, and Master of the Hunt and Hunting Instincts apply.

The second roll is whether the trap kills the animal or whether it manages to escape the trap, and this is where the gear bonus has to apply, cos a fox might get out of a snare set by an amateur, but it's not escaping a bear trap set by an experienced hunter.

Master of the Hunt definitely gives you bonuses on the first Survival roll, and *maybe* on the second (you could argue it both ways). The wolfkin talent Hunting Instinct arguably applies to both rolls, as you can designate a prey as your target and get combat bonuses against it, so I'd say Master of the Hunt should give bonuses on both rolls as well.
