The Great Dark fanart

Fri 07 Jun 2024, 21:22

I'm always inspired by Martin Grip's fantastic illustrations. Did some character sketches for the setting that I thought I'd share. Need to dig into the style more but trying to get the overall feeling down for now. For those with artistic interest, ballpoint sketches given some digital color.

EDIT: not sure why the previous link went dead but trying an alternative.

These are great, thanks for fixing the link - I like your little 'palette spots', what drawing package are you using?

Thanks! Glad you like them. Wasn’t sure about leaving the palette in but as these are pretty loose and sketchy and more at the concept stage, I thought it was fun to keep. If you’re interested you can find the underlying ballpoint sketch on Cara.app.

Got a lot of ideas I want to explore so more is coming. :)

I work from sketches on paper then I’ve used PS and Procreate. Transitioning to CSP and Krita though from PS. Also use Glaze or Nightshade for AI protection/poison pill.

Wow, these character designs are stunning! They're giving really strong "Alien meets Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" vibes with a scavenge-y, post-apocaliptic feel, which I think is very fitting. This is really really awesome!

That being said - and I apologise if this feels a bit off-topic; I know it doesn't have much to do with the original post -, while I love the little I have seen of the new edition, I have to say I really miss the mystical, Middle-Eastern, Arabian Nights feel of the first edition. Coriolis was very much about that feel in my mind and heart, and seeing that almost entirely gone is somewhat heartbreaking :'(.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. Gorgeous artwork, Tomas!

Thanks! Glad you like them. That's a cool summary of the sketches :D

Not sure that FL have given up on that entirely, but perhaps downplayed it so far for the games delving appeal. I hope to see it influence more of the life in Ship City and I find it referenced in the patterns and designs of the illustrations. As for my own doodling, I've been caught up in other things but slowly filling up a sketchbook with ideas related to CGD. Among those are some roughs for vendors and the like, where I have leaned more on North African and Mid-Eastern influences. I'll see if I can find some to share ahead.

Summer vacation sketching fun of another delver while enjoying good weather outdoors. Ink and watercolor on paper with a quick color pencil touch up.
