Ranged attacks in close combat

Is there anything stopping me from making a ranged attack when engaged in close combat. If I read correctly this would avoid triggering a counter attack, which seems pretty powerful. Am I missing something?

Hello! Any attack in base contact is considered a melee attack, not a ranged attack, so using a ranged weapon in melee won't save you from a counter attack.

Hello,

I have some related questions.

Does applying Knockback in Melee save the attacker from a counter attack as the models are no longer in base contact? Basically what triggers first - Knockback or Counterattack.
Can the counterattack be Ranged if the attacker chooses to apply Knockback?
And if yes, can Aimed Fire weapons be used?

The rules don't specify the counterattack needs to be melee, but it feels like this may be going against the intent of the design.
