Sneak Attack and subtle weapons:

Thu 16 May 2024, 13:32

Hi,

Do I read the rules correctly that a melee sneak attack with a subtle weapon gives you 2 boons on the attack roll?

A sneak attack (p.43) gives you a boon and the target can't dodge or parry the attack. If using a subtle weapon, the damage is increase by one die. The Heroic Ability - Backstabbing counts as a sneak attack, giving you the same bonus, so still a boon and it can't be parried or dodged and since Backstabbing can only be done with a subtle weapon, the damage is also increased by one die. The Heroic Ability - Assassin can be combined with this for an extra damage die.

On page 73 it says:
“Subtle: The weapon grants a boon and increased damage when performing sneak attacks (page 43).”

So it’s the combination of the sneak attack rules and the description of the subtle trait under the gear chapter that confuses me.

Yeah, that sentence can be confusing, but it references the sneak attack rule as a whole not just part of it. The actual rule on p.43 is much clearer.

But a sneak attack that uses a melee weapon always gets a boon right? So to write under the description of the subtle trait that you get a boon as well as an extra damage die is poorly phrased. Why mention something generic that is applicable to all melee weapons as well as specific rule under the description for the weapon trait?

I think that should be clarified in the errata.

I agree. There are som things here and there that could be more clear.

edit: Well, there is an errata thread. Who knows, FL might even read that before the next update.

Yeah, but thank you for the clarification!
