Foot movement clarification

Thu 15 Feb 2024, 05:41

Does making a mobility roll to move farther than 2 hexes count as a second fast action, or is still a single action? because if it's the latter, it would mean that a character can run up to 120 meters in 5-10 seconds, which is pretty superhuman.

In a vehicle example, they say that it is after the movement, 2nd fast action in the vehicle example, you roll (driving in that case) in order to move a little bit further, so I would say, you roll after your movement, regardless if your movement is one or two actions in order to move a bit extra.

I thought the mobility roll was part of your movement action, but you could only roll once.

Agreed, 120m is pretty fast. But also more conceptual. Meaning you could go from the innermost edge of a hex to another innermost hex - ie you move 1 hex but in reality you only move 2m to cross the hex edge.

I agree that the rules RAW doesn't say this or that regarding this so it is pretty much choose either mobility roll after each run move action or at the end of your movement. I don't think it will change much since extreme results would be rare and there are consequences when it comes to skill rolls and failing.

Came to this conclusion myself after crunching the numbers. If you can make two 4 success rolls in a row you deserve a superhuman feat or two.

From the web: "Most non-elite adult runners can sprint 100m somewhere between 12-20 seconds". This is equivalent to saying that most non-elite adult runners can sprint 50m in 6-10 seconds. Given that all characters can run 40 in 5-10 seconds, which is pretty darn close to the speed of a non-elite adult runner, it would make sense to only allow a single Mobility Roll when a character uses both of their Fast actions to Run.

1st fast action 20m (mobility roll, max 4 successes pushes that to 60m)
2nd fast action 20m (mobility roll, max 4 successes pushes that to 60m)
total max 120m

per wikipedia on 100m dash. "The current men's world record is 9.58 seconds, set by Jamaica's Usain Bolt in 2009, while the women's world record is 10.49 seconds set by American Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988"

A level is supposed to be olympian.

Most pushes I have seen are single or double success. So say both moves are double successes, that would be 80m

And keep in mind -2 for backpack, and terrain modifiers for the hex you end the 20m in for pushing further with that mobility roll.

One thing to note as well, is that nobody was shooting at Usain Bolt when he set those times ;)

People can push their bodies to pretty amazing levels when under extreme duress and under massive adrenaline bursts. :)

But yeah, it would be incredibly rare for anyone in-game to not only not have any backpack on, not have any terrain modifiers (ie. sprinting down a flat untouched asphalt road) AND manage to roll four successes twice in a row. If anyone happens to do that, let's just give them the win ;)
