FTL Allowed Software beyond VTTs

Mon 17 Apr 2023, 23:53

Hello again! Some questions about the intent around FTL, the YZE SRD, and "software" which are not specifically NFT or VTT.

"Free League hereby grants you a worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive right to
copy, use, modify, translate, and distribute the YZE SRD in printed form,
as a PDF, or as a virtual tabletop module (“VTT”) as part of your own
tabletop role playing game, modules, and expansions (your “Game”).

VTTs do not include NFTs or video games, only virtual tabletop modules."

What is the intent of the FTL when it comes to standalone software encoding YZE "rules", "logic", and "data structures" such as character generators, dice rollers, web-page utilities which are not specifically part of an entire Virtual Table Top suite?

Does "video game" broadly include text-only adventure games, talkers, or multiple-user dungeons (MUDs)?

Or does Free League specifically consider "video games" to mean more modern-era software with graphical 2D or 3D interfaces?

Hello!

The intent here is that you can publish your YZE-based RPG as VTT module if you like. The intent is not for the license to be used for creating general YZE online tools.

Hi Tomas, just to be clear, does that mean games published under the FTL cannot utilise web apps like character generators or random table rollers, even if the web apps contain no text from the SRD (other than terms like stat labels and names)?
I make YZE games (https://drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matt%20Kay) and produce predominately Free League content on my YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@3skulls)

So, I think the guideline is that if you wish to create any YZE software outside of a virtual table top module, then you need to contact Free League and work out a specific license for your project instead of starting with the SRD.

Thanks for the clarification!
