Hello, I just bought Symbaroum about two weeks ago. Me and friends are excited to play it for the first time, however i was tasked with narrating it.
As I was studying the rules i noticed two things that at first made no sense: the defense formula proposed by the book on page 101, and the formula on page 171 for social challenges [Attribute–Difficulty Level]. Specifically because of the use of the minus signs.
I made a document explaining the rules i plan on using with my friends. I took the time to write somewhat of mathematical (or logical if the term mathematical sounds too pretentious) proof of why the formula used to calculate both of these things contradicts the design pretention.
I'll attach said document to this post and hope you'll read it and give me your feedback. The demonstation i'm talking about is found at the end of it. Also i wan't to clarify i'm sharing all of this in good faith, and i don't want to appear as a know-it-all kind of player. If I'm wrong please let me know. Also i'm pretty sure that, for starters, i'm overthinking a lot of this and it should be approached with a less logical lens.

I think you're being too literal.

Defence = Quick - Impeding Value of Armour

Impeding Value generally increases by a point for each type, and cumbersome adds another point. So Crow Armour applies -4 to your Quick. The intention is to reduce Quick, not apply a double minus mathematical operation, its just the way its written. The heavier and more bulky your armour is, the slower you are. Simples.

The formula on p.171 doesn't apply to social challenges - its talking about the standard [Attribute - Modifier] test (which sometimes can be [Attribute + Modifier] if its easy). Remember that [Attribute - Difficulty Leve] note is just shorthand, the actual tests are written in long form in the text. These are tests where the outcome is simple success or failure - Find The Crumpled Letter In The Dead Body's Pocket [Vigilance + 5], you either find it or you don't, but its pretty easy to spot. Recognise That The Seal On That Letter Belongs To A Minor Local Noble [Cunning - 5] - you either know about this dude or you don't.

Social challenges are pure role-playing and don't use dice at all.

Thank you Daniel for this post and for writing up a summary if the Basic rules. The System is pretty simple but as you point out, the rules are somewhat spread all over the core rule book and also following campaign books. As a GM I found it somewhat challenging in the start resetting my brain to never needing to roll and only look at those modiefiers which often stated minus (-) on negative modifiers. I mostly play online using Foundry and I would recommend joining Davokars Explorers League community on Discord. Lots of helpful People over there (as well as here).
