Possibly stupid question about Pierce

Thu 02 Feb 2023, 03:34

Page 99: Spend 1 Success icon ot modify the Feat die numerical of your attack by +1 (swords), +2 (bows), +3 (spears) — thus possibly triggering a peircing blow (Sauron and G Rune results unaffected).

So, given that 10 and 12 (G) are your piercing blow dice, and you are carrying a bow, and you roll a 9 on the feat die and get a success overall with an additional 6, you can add +2 for your bow, which would be…..11. It seems silly that you wouldn’t get a piercing blow because piercing blow is defined as 10 or 12.

Can I just assume if you have enough to get at least a 10, your success grants you a piercing blow, almost as if you could choose +1 or +2 for your bow? Common sense dictates you would be rewarded for getting that 9 into piercing territory, but the rule doesn’t make this clear.

I always assumed that the special meaning of the eye applies only if it is a direct result, not if you achieve "10" by adding modifications. But I cannot prove this by quoting a rule.

Makes sense to me, I mean, I'm going to apply common sense and say if your 1,2 or 3 bonus will put you at 10+ you get a Pierce. But it would be an interesting clarification in case we're mistaken.

Certainly works this way, p51 even has keen doing a pierce on 9+, superior keen on p165 is noted as 8+.

Or you can think of it differently, with the numbers on a feat die capping out at 10 even if you add 3 to a feat die result of 8.

Otherwise having different bonuses for spears/swords and bows would just be fiddly, rather than a way of boosting the lower damage weapons.

If you roll a 9 on the Feat die and modify it enough to reach at least a 10 (including bonuses like the +2 for bows),wordle unlimited you trigger a piercing blow. In your example, the 9 + 2 would still count as a piercing blow.

Suppose the PC has a TN of 16 and, using a bow, they roll a 8 with the feat die and a 6 with the success die then a 14, it would be a miss... Right?
Or may the player spend the success die to add a +2 to the feat die getting both 8+2=10 then a hit (10+6=16), and a piercing blow?

No, 6s can only be spent if the roll overall was a success. Unless you hit your TN, the sixes don't count for anything other than trying to reach your TN.

You could have spent Hope, used a Useful/ Magic Item, used a Cultural Blessing or Virtue, got an Advantage, used a Combat Task or otherwise gained +1d for your roll before you rolled, but unless you have a Patron that allows rerolls like Círdan or otherwise have special abilities like that, then once you roll, if you fail, you've failed and that's that.
