I am checking back to see if there is an update on the OGL. While it'd be great to see an OGL developed by Free League, I agree with the sentiment of banning together with the other publishers on the ORC.

We’ll looks like we have our answer - Free League have been developing their own ogl over the last year as well as a 3rd party license for dragonbane - great news!

I was hoping for FL to follow the ORC route, but this is great news anyway. When will the text be ready?

I don't fault Free League for not jumping on the ORC bandwagon yet since we don't actually know what ORC looks like, and Free League might want to hurry up and create their own to allow fans and publishers to keep working on third party content while we wait. It's entirely possible that Free League switches to ORC later, but who knows.

My own question is this: Can Free League use the actual term "Open Gaming License" (OGL)? That's a specific term and acronym and I'm concerned Wizards might try and go after Free League because the term "OGL" is part of their intellectual property. Not that it's in any way a major threat since Free League can rename it at any time without consequence.

Call it the Year Zero License (YZL) to go with the Year Zero Engine (YZE) SRD?

I am loving how this entire legal bait-and-switch on Wizards of the Cost part has backfired into the entire TTRPG world beyond the D&D horizon suddenly getting stronger.

It sort of feels like the ham-handed cash grab attempt was really doing us a motivational favor to go ahead and federate and cooperate openly.

Curious to see what Free League comes up with since the YZE SRD is a signficant part of why I invest in the rest of the material.

Waiting for ORC or not is one decision.

But even if Free League adopts their own Year Zero License ... perhaps leaving it open to dual-license under ORC (without conflicts) would leave the door open for taking advantage of any useful ORC-licensed material in future projects as well?

That's part of how we got into the OGL tangle - and it was a good problem to have - was that it was possible to dip into and out of so many publishers' OGL material to enhance your particular contribution.

Each license is an island ... as Wizards is finding out ... and the ORC appears to be an island chain that agrees to work together - which could lead to a far greater pool of licensed material than just one publisher can amass.

Sorry to bother with a stupid question, (at least a naive question ;-) ), although there is something I don't get there: which part of YZE SRD is referencing D&D SRD enforcing OGL license? I'm not a specialist of D&D, but I really don't see mechanisms from D20 system been used in Mutant Year Zero for instance.
Can anyone shed lights on my ignorance ?

FL used WotC OGL when designing their OGL for YZE instead of writing their own OGL from the get-go and in that they where referencing the YZE SRD, not any other SRD. FLs new OGL is their own so they have 100% control over it, so it doesn't matter what WotC does or doesn't do. Their new OGL will of course point to the YZE SRD, which appears to also be updated with some new things for people to use when they design their own YZE game.

Thanks for enlightening the discussion. So, it means YZE dependency on OGL belongs to a shortcut made by FL. They must be regretting it !
