Is Wake the Final Product?

Tue 08 Nov 2022, 21:22

Hullo, folks, Tomas,

So with Wake of the Icons coming out some time in the new year, does this mean that the Coriolis RPG line of products will be ending? Or is there some hope that we'll see new material for the game after the Wake adventures?

Nothing is confirmed, but from what I remember from the monthly update videos is that they are talking about possibly doing a new edition of the game and some other things.

Honestly, I hope not. I like Free League cause they don't do the D&D/Call of Cthulhu Edition Churn Mombo.

They just port the rules with proper tweaks to a new game. Rather see more new settings/options.

And while I am glad they got the ALIEN and Blade Runner licenses, I hope this trend doesn't continue much past Walking Dead. Between reading their own homemade stuff and licenses, I like the homemade stuff more.

Well they labeled one of the booklets, Scenario Compendium 1, so while that's not a guarantee it seems like at some point they planned/hoped to do more.

I haven't watched any of the monthly update videos (don't know where to find them, to be honest), but I really hope that they don't do a new, second edition of Coriolis - The Third Horizon. It would seem to me that any new edition would have to deal with the universe the way it is in the wake (no pun intended!) of the finish of the epic trilogy that we're still waiting for Part 3 on. The game universe could really use some more information on various star systems, and could certainly do with a few more adventures and the like. And perhaps a book or three on the various factions of the Third Horizon. I think the game universe still has a lot of potential, and there is stuff that they could still continue to produce for it.

At times, the Coriolis line just seems to be one that they're allowing to vanish into the Dark Between the Stars, as they turn their attention to other game lines. *sigh*

Yep, I had always hoped that that supplement was a portend of things to come. Alas, such has not come to pass.

It is also one of the easiest Free League games to get new players into, as you don't need 2 to 3 different distinct sets of D6 dice, but is more complex than TftL for those that like to have character options. I also love Mutant Year Zero and Forbidden Lands (also their original IP) but needing to keep track of which dice came from attributes and which from gear when pushing is somewhat a pain.

(Tip: When players don't have enough different colored dice for this, I make a 'play mat' for them with a sheet of paper. Draw some labeled boxes on the paper, and they roll each set (Attribute, Skill, Gear or whatever per the game) separate, and put the results in the box. Then if they decide to push, they roll and return each set separate to the box, then count results. Takes a bit longer, but keeps out confusion as to which dice where from what part for effects.)

Personally I'd really like to see a new edition, mostly to take the things they've learned from later games and spruce up the ruleset for this game. Coriolis is one of the earliest games using this engine, and in my opinion it shows. Just for that I'd like an updated rulebook.
I imagine this would also help get more players to try out the game. Getting Wake is fantastic for a long term GM, but for new players? I'm not so sure. But an updated rulebook released together with a new starter set? Maybe as a proper kickstarter and everything to build hype?

That being said, more Scenario Compediums, character concepts, late game options, and other sourcebooks would be very welcome.
Honestly just getting more Coriolis stuff to cram my shelves with would make me a very happy boy.

Here is the latest one with a timecode specific to Coriolis: https://youtu.be/m-y0Dm2iz0s?t=1448
That is kinda why I want one, I think a new edition would for one be a more clean slate to release produce new content from. I kinda hope they would set it pre-Mercy though, although I don't know if that's a naive thought or not.
