Wouldn't the better your skill as a fighter mean that you could read your opponent better?
Absolutely! And this a part of the hidden combos system - using specific talents, skilled fighters will be able to read their opponents' moves before they strike.
Also, each melee attack will have an attacker and a defender. If you're the defender and choose to stab, you are taking a risk as the attackers stab will go first and if you take damage from that attack your Stab will be lost due to shock and pain (unless you have the talent to resist pain).
The point that the hidden combo system is only for melee and not ranged combat is certainly valid. We feel however that melee has a bigger part to play in a fantasy title than in scifi games like Mutant: Year Zero and Coriolis, hence it makes sense to expand on it in this game.
On a general note, many of you have expressed reservations about the hidden combo system and we are listening to those as we proceed with the design work. You will also get the chance to try the system out in the Alpha release before it is settled in stone (or on paper, rather).
