I also use the breaks between games when there is a fellowship phase to send each player information on events that concern them. This makes for great roleplay opportunities when we next meet for a session as each hero has something to share that the others do not know. This is tied to fellowship undertakings, to their calling and to some features. I did this with 1E and it worked well as an immersive tool.

Generally I try to use Hate as often as possible. It scares the players up front and shows off the adversaries' fell abilities, so they are excited and engaged. But that also forces the monster to get weary, at which point the players are probably going to clean the adversaries' clock. Thus, it makes fights exciting and dramatic, but also not too long, which I think is perfect.
