A 124 grain M882 9mm NATO round is not significantly heavier that a 123 grain 7N6 7.62X39. It is significantly heavier than a 62 grain M855 or 55 grain M193 5.56. If the latter is going through a standard wall, the former is, too. The reverse isn't necessarily true.

And anyone who refers to the first part of a Mozambique drill as a double tap is a yahoo you need to reconsider getting training from. Controlled pair.

But shucks, that 7.62x39 is flying well over twice as fast and has about 4x the muzzle energy of the 9mm. And any 5.56 of course, being lighter, is even going substantially faster. Weight is just one part of a pretty important equation.

V1 had a negative modifier for firing on the move. "Movement by Firer". SMGs (including carbines like M177) had no modifier, making them useful even though they have short range.

V4 has no modifier for firing on the move. "close combat" might be a place in the rules where an smg is better than an assault rifle.

I thought that too, until I considered adding one -- but actually, V4 does have this penalty, essentially.

In V4 you have a -2 modifier if you do not aim before firing. You cannot aim, move and fire in the same turn. Therefore, there actually IS a penalty for firing on the move. (this is another place where a feat would be kinda cool).

Alternatively you could go crazy and let pistols / smgs swap initiative cards with longer weapons in confined spaces - and maybe pistols swap with smg in very confined spaces.

Great suggestion, I like this best of all. The advantage to the pistol and SMG is in confined spaces, and it's about speed.

Here's what I've gone with:

* pistols and SMGs will suffer only a -1 penalty (rather than -2) to un-aimed fire if within Short range

* pistols and SMGs will suffer only a -2 penalty (rather than -3) for firing while in Close Combat

It hasn't come up yet to test, though.

To think, I wasn't even gonna mention number 4!

No, it's an important question! Otherwise everyone ends up carrying the same identical "best" weapons, which is neither interesting nor realistic.
