The students of Schola Saint George. Would really like to hear about how the Halberd is only use against cavalry. That or the training from the historical text is wrong, or it was popular weapon because it could be use to fight cavalry, and infantry. I have a lot of real world training with weapons. That is what I based my suggestions from. Now there are very good balance reasons for things working differently in a game then the real world. I was just offering suggestions.

Now for the starting gear. No the game is not centered around combat. However combat happens, and can happen at any time. Any character that is going to explore the unknown with no real weapon, and no real skill at staying alive in the unknown wilds. Why are we letting them join us?

Because they have other skills or abilities? Just look at any random expedition from movies or litterature, are they all comprised of battle-hardened warriors? Just look at Frodo and the other hobbits, are they fighters armed to their teeth? No, but they pick stuff up along the way (both gear- and skillwise) and by the end they save Middle-earth. Not through their prowess with a sword, but through cunning, wits, courage and a good amount of dumb luck.

You're misquoting me.  Of course the halberd can be used for a normal melee, but it's initial purpose is against calvary.  I'm only saying it shouldn't get a parrying tag, not that it shouldn't be used in melee.  Just like you mentioning the 2H warhammer shouldn't be a parrying weapon.

Anyway, I've started a new thread to discuss parrying (link), feel free to continue the conversation there.  I actually advocate a completely different way of handling Parrying, which you might be interested in.

As for starting weapons, if you feel the starting gear isn't enough for your game, just give the players more money at the start, or change their starting weapon.  I feel the gear is absolutely perfect as is, fitting in with the tone of the setting quite nicely.  All that is missing is a dagger for the Ranger, but this is a fairlz minor complaint and very easy to houserule if the RAW aren't changed.
