Re: Sharing rations

Sure, that works, too (but not for splitting a d6 resource). I guess my point was that the resource dice should be amended, but not require a consume-type roll.
You mean "but not for splitting a d4 resource", right?

It seems to me that it should work, in most cases, to simply lower your own dice level by the same number that you want to increase someone elses. So a d6 can be split into two d4, a d8 into d6+d4, etc.

Sharing a d4 resource could be handled by rolling for the resource immediately. If it fails, then the giver & recipient have to decide who gets to take the entire resource, leaving nothing to the other. If it succeeds, then the giver keeps the d4 level and the recipient gets the special resource value of "1". I.e. a single ration.
Nope, I meant d6. The example Eldhierta used split a dice by the actual number, not the die type: d12 becomes a d8+d4 or d6+d6. Using that example, it wouldn't be possible with a d6, as you'd need a d4+d2.

So yeah, I'm not too bothered how this is handled so long as a consumable is split without needing to roll.

This is how I interpret the rules regarding this.

When a resources die is split, the idea is that it shifts down one level, so one D8 becomes two separate D6s.

Splitting consumables is not straightforward because resource depletion is a probability, not a discrete decrease in quantity.

According to the rules, if a resource is depleted (consumed, traded, lost, etc.) there is a probability that its availability will further decrease in probability.

16.7% chance a D12 will drop to a D10.
20.0% chance a D10 will drop to a D8.
25.0% chance a D8 will drop to a D6.
33.3% chance a D6 will drop to a D4.
50.0% chance a D4 will drop to a 0.

If you split your consumable resource evenly then its probability of dropping down one die level should double.
So, a D12 can become 2D6 and a D8 can become 2D4, but a D4, D6, and D10 cannot be evenly split.
In fact, you cannot split any of the die levels unevenly either.
There’s only three option: D12 => 2D6, D12 => 3D4, or D8 => 2D4.

Two methods of sharing consumables:
1. Splitting resources is not equitable, and the 2 characters have a combined lower quantity. This creates an incentive to not share.
2. Splitting resources is not equitable, and the 2 characters have a combined greater quantity. This creates an incentive to always share.

Thanks for the clarification, that kinda makes sense as you can feed two people with almost as much food as feeding one, as most stretched families will agree.

How would you split a d4 resource? Or would that not be possible?

I think that you can’t split a d4 resource. It’s only enough for yourself. If you give it all up I would allow the other player to increase their resource by one die or if they have nothing they get the d4. And the other player has now 0 resources.

This implies that you also need two resources of equal value to create one of the next higher value. I'd be happy with that.

Not sure how that would be managed in game, if my players come across some rations during an encounter i would then have to know the resource level of those rations to ensure the dice value matched or exceeded what they currently had otherwise they would not be able to increase their current dice value.  I would rather just say, "you find some food, increase your dice value one step", but i guess as GM i can do that anyway.
Anyone know how rations or are costed up?

The main reason I thought ...

"If you wan't to give a friend some of your rations, then lower your resource dice one step and your friend can increase his one step"

... is that when you buy rations, arrows and torches, you buy them in resource dice steps (i.e. if you buy two food, then you increase your food resource dice two steps or you can increase yours one step and your friend his food resource dice one step.). Much easier way to handle this I must say and is probably how I will handle this in my game.

This is how I will handle it, too. Decreasing your resource by one step creating 2 stacks of the lower die value (ie d12 becomes two d10 stacks) doesn't sit right with me. It's the simplest option and works in every situation (other than d4) without suddenly creating (as I see it) an abundance of resource.
