Delve Zones and Combat Zones

Tue 04 Nov 2025, 22:27

Are the zones used for delve maps the same scale as zones used for combat? E.g., if a key location is shown as being one zone in size on a delve map, does that mean it is one zone as far as a combat is concerned?

You can see on the map on page 218 in the core rulebook an example map and on that you can see that 1 square equals 1 zone. You can see the same on the Black Ziggurat map on page 273.

Right, but do those correspond to combat zones? E.g., area 4 on the map on p. 273 is 1 zone large. Does that mean a combat that occures in Area 4 would only be 1 zone in size, or are combat zones different?

p. 39 says "How big a zone [in combat] is varies – from a few steps across up to about 25 meters." In combat, a PC can move 1-2 zones in the space of 5-10 seconds. In a delve, it takes 15 minutes (a stretch) to move 1 delve map zone, i.e, one marker. This makes me think they are different, but the game is unfortunately using the same terminology for both.

Hi!

Zones in combat can vary in size as you noted in the Core Rules. And the zones in delve can also vary in size too. In some delves in the campaign The Flowers of Algorab, zones on scan maps are actullay much bigger.

The main thing is that when you move into e key location, you start handling time and distance differently from a delve. In BZ we designed the combat map to be approx. 3 combat zones wide (p 279), although the delve is 5 zones wide (p 273).

A location inside a "square" of a delve map can contain many zones, as it can be divided in small rooms and corridors that work as different zones in combat.

Hope that helps (?).

Cheers,
