Which Alien scenario should I run for October and Halloween?

Thu 25 Sep 2025, 10:49

Hi all, I like to play horror rpgs with my friends through the month of October and this year I’ve decided on running the Alien rpg! We’ve play CotG a couple years ago so that leaves me Destroyer of Worlds and Hearts of Darkness. Which do yall recommend?

Both scenarios would work well, but let me complicate things.

Regarding DoW, that story is a (semi-)direct continuation of CotG so you might want to run that next. It is also, I would say, the most popular Alien RPG cinematic scenario and especially the Player Characters are well done and well integrated into the story here.

In contrast, HoD follows DoW but is much more of a haunted house -- full of jump scares and nasty gore -- and might fit the context of Halloween better. Here too, the PCs are pretty good and integrated, but these PCs less united and the chance of solo-adventuring and PvP is much greater here.

Generally, I found HoD a little harder to run and keep track of than DoW, but both had some very memorable scenes and arcs.

All else being equal, I would chose DoW in your case.

I was going to suggest the same thing, Angelman.

Heart of Darkness is the scariest ALIEN scenario I've played. Destroyer of Worlds was a fun apocalyptic shoot-'em-up. Assuming that you don't care about running them in chronological order*, the question comes down to this, IMO: "Which movie would you cue up for Halloween: Alien or Aliens?

Because it's not a relatively straightforward "Marines, we are leaving!" scenario, Heart of Darkness is definitely harder on MU/TH/UR.

*They're not directly related for the characters, but the lore and Easter eggs stack up for the players. Barring other considerations, like Halloween or GM workload, I would definitely recommend running them in order, at least for the same group of players.
