TOMAS - CMOM Evolved Edition and Pilot

Wed 27 Aug 2025, 13:34

Hello Tomas,
The work being done on your product line keeps showing how a good product should be made to the point that I keep getting amazing feedback from new players as an Agent of the League (have been running lots of Dragonbane at local fairs and game nights).

My group of regulars for mostly Alien and Dragonbane gifted me the Kickstarter for the Evolved Edition to keep me mastering (not sure who's the gift is for but... you dont look the gifted horse in the mouth i gues.. :) ) and i saw that an Evolved version of CMOM was also part of it.

I was wondering if you could spend a little space in the Evolved CMOM to add\clarify how the CMOM version of the PILOT its supposed to be build during character creation (skill points allocation, talents, etc) as quite recurrently my players get confused on what rules should apply or not apply.

As i just re-stumbled on this issue last night, maybe you could even anticipate here on the forum how it should be done?

Thanks again and looking forward to receive the new Evolved edition!

Hi Newt, welcome to the Alien RPG forum. I don't know if this answers your question, but the "career pilot" will be in the new Corerules Evolved Edition (beta PDF, page 37). You'll find all the details there (if you have the Corerules). All the books (Corerules Evolved Edition + Starter Set Evolved HLD Expanded + Cinematic Rapture Protocol) are in final draft form, and everything should be out by the holidays (in my opinion, but I don't have the exact dates yet). They're currently rewriting a new final version, so I can't help you right now.

The best thing to do is work with the books (I mean PDFs) you currently have in hand; you have either the Corerules Evolved (Beta PDF) or the Starter Set Evolved HLD Expanded with a very shortened rulebook (Beta PDF). If you don't have the Beta PDFs, you should check with the person who provided you with the gift in question (if you have a gift bundle, you need a Beta PDF).

If I understand correctly, you have the CMOM Evolved expansion (lucky you, I haven't seen the CMOM Evolved edition; I played the first edition of CMOM, so I'm pretty familiar with everything). For now, you can probably base your pilot stats (career) on the NPC pilot Lieutenant Karen Eckhart. But in my opinion, you probably don't need a pilot in the fighter squad because they should all be playing Marines.

I don't know exactly which books you have, but with a bit of specificity, Newt, it would help me better understand your needs. If you could clarify your requirements for me, please.

Hello Arthur,
many thanks for the reply, welcome and suggestions.

English is not my first language so my original post might be misleading but what i was trying to ask is if they will fix a recurring issue with the previous edition of the CMOM manual when they update it to the Evolved edition.

I own the previous Core + CMOM as i run games of Alien and, more often, Dragonbane regularly for a local group and during fairs.

According to my paper copy of the CMOM the Pilot career is listed in a couple of tables but is not clear at all if the character should be made according to the Core rules (min\max skill points, talents, etc) or the CMOM rules or a mix of them. I know there are several house rules and homemade solutions but having an official one on the CMOM manual would be very nice and save me repeated requests for clarification\house ruling by the players.

I only have the beta for the Core and Starter Evolved beta, and i am too looking forward to get the final pdf and hard copies (and minis).

Thank you again for the warm welcome,
Newt

Hi Newt,

Thanks for your explanation. Well, I haven't read CMOM Evolved, and you're telling me about a recurring problem with the pilot version (first edition) of CMOM. Please explain to me (in your own words) the problem in question for the Pilot, and I'll do my best to answer you right away with a solution (that I can see). I don't remember the error in question, so if you could refresh my memory, that would be great.

What I see, and this is my understanding of your request, in the Core Rules (first edition PDF p. 50), we're talking about a civilian, not a military, career pilot who works on cargo runs. In CMOM (first edition PDF p. 56), you have the military Dropship Crew Chief (like Spunkmayer in Aliens). He's not a pilot but a flight technician, but you can use that as a basis for the military pilot with the key attribute AGILITY. Take the Pilot elements from the Corerules (PDF p. 50) with a mix of elements for the Marines (CMOM First Edition PDF p. 56 and up).

As a reference, use Lieutenant Karen Eckhart (CMOM First Edition PDF p. 113) for attributes, skills, talents, and gear.

Also, I invite you to write a note in the thread (Official Errata) regarding the Pilot elements to be corrected in CMOM Evolved.

P.S. I remember, they didn't include the Pilot career in CMOM because it was already in the Corerules. You just have to keep in mind that in the Corerules, the Pilot career is non-military. So, you need to add military elements from CMOM and you'll be ready for the adventure.

Enjoy your games,
Arthur.

I was under the impression that a Colonial Marine Pilot, would use both CORE and CMON following example:
1. Choose unit commander
2. Choose MOS/Career (This case being Pilot)
3. Determine attributes
4. Determine skills
*Attribute and skill restrictions based off (PILOT) from CORE and restrictions in CMON*
5. Choose MOS/Career Talent (PILOT)
6. Roll on Event table C
7. Choose Rank
8. Choose Name
9. Choose Appearance
10. Determine Personal Agenda
11. Choose Buddy/Rival
12. Starting Gear: Basic Gear, List A gear, List B gear, and Pilot's Specialty Gear. Determine signature item.

In short the Military pilot has to allocate a skill point in CLOSE COMBAT, STAMINA, RANGED COMBAT, PILOTING, and COMTECH, has a basic training event, and has more starting gear than a civilian pilot.

That's exactly the case, Sgt. Frosty. That's an excellent checklist you have there, thank you. Thanks for your addition. It's been a long time since I read the CMOM.

Hi ArthurDallas!
Thanks again for the always interesting replies!

I'll look at Karen profile but to make it simple while they did decide not to put the Pilot in the CMOM as its already in the CORE, they did include it in the CMOM without giving any indication on which skill distribution parameters and CMOM talents choice it should be made by the players.

The result is a lot of confusion and many people using other careers like you suggested or simply using the civilian Pilot profile.

I think that a simple line of text explaining how to use the CMOM rules to make the Pilot would go along way to save me and other GMs from having to improvise solutions.

Its a minor thing but in well polished products like Free League ones it shows.

I'll also flag it in the forum section you suggested, many thaanks!

Hi SgtFrosty,
YES! That is also how i have been doing it until now for my players. Good to know i was not alone in this interpretation of the rules.

I hope they do add even a little line on the manual clarifying this so i dont have to clear it for my players recurrently (so many want to be Ferro... or Maverik LOL ).

But TALENT wise many of my players asked "what about the CMOM talents, nothing for the Pilot to choose? Only from CORE?" so maybe also giving one or two from the CMOM new talents to the Pilot would be a nice add-on...

Did you give your players access to any of those on a regular basis? Or just the CORE ones?

Many thanks for sharing your take on this.

For talents I would say the initial has to be from the core rules for pilot but any additional would have access to the additional ones from CMON. At this time it's up to the GM to update CMON talents to evolved edition, some may need to be changed.

Hopefully that helps.
