Rider Profession: Horseback Fighter Talent?

Sun 08 Jun 2025, 19:25

So, my players and I are generating characters for the first time, and one player has chosen a Human Rider. However, there is the talent "Horseback Fighter" which stipulates needing that talent to be able to "fire a short bow or sling from a mount."

Does the Rider Profession need to take this talent to perform an ability that seems as though their Profession should already by proficient and capable of performing?

Thank you!

The Horseback Fighter talent allows you to fight with shortbow or sling while on horseback (and later on bonus on melee attacks and mounted charge), none of the three profession talents do that. If you want to be a Rider that fights mounted (and most likely start with Path of the Knight profession talent) you most likely take Horseback Fighter from the start. If you instead wants to be just someone who rides horses well, you pick Path of the Companion or Path or the Plains and then some other general talents.

Thank you!

This makes sense now. That's exactly the path she's taking: knight who can use bow while riding horseback.

It takes some adjustment when starting a new system. I suppose none of the other professions really give a character any added ability (other than Key Attributes, Profession Skills, and Gear); they're just a focus on how to develop a character of that profession or archetype.

All characters start with a kin talent, a profession talent (to rank 1) that gives you abilities that cost WP to use that are unique to that kin/profession. Each character also start with 1-3 general talents. You can choose to start with one less general talent and instead increase a talent one rank (this includes your profession talent).

Also remember that you can combine talents and ranks, except profession talents (i.e. you can only spend WP on one thing).

Yep! Thanks, again.

We had the Talents portion down well enough; it was just the flavor text that we were reading into too much that led to our original question.
