Expanded Horrors

Tue 27 May 2025, 14:01

I'm just wondering if there is a larger pool of creatures/horrors/adversaries already available?
Eg: Spitter and Burster, etc from Fireteam Elite

Do rules and stats exist already in some form or another that mimic... For lack of a better word zombies? A creature that burrows into your brain and takes over, a fungi or virus that corrupts its host, or a program that rewrites Synthetic programming? (Like Dead Space, Callisto Protocol, and more)

Cinematic adventures have some additional monster types that aren't in the core book - the Abominations from Chariot of the Gods are pretty zombie-like. You could reflavour one of their attacks to a bite, and add a roll against disease to make it transmissible.

That game made very interesting additions to the lore... They even acknowledged the events from "The Frontier War" campaign narrated in the Colonial Marine's Operations Manual.
I hope that in future books, we'll see the rpg version of those extra Xeno variants from the game, as well as some versions of the wonderful weapons included.
If not, they shouldn't be too difficult to homebrew.

The Venator and Popper from CMOM were from FTE, so it's not out of the question we see the burster or spitter.

I was actually considering taking the zombie swarm rules from TWD pretty much whole cloth for an adventure involving a colony that used a native fungus as a food source, then the black goo was used to experiment on it and a “last of us” situation broke out.

That's a great idea. I wasn't sure if any of the other games were compatible rules wise.
I'll have to get ahold of some of the other systems for nightmare fuel for my players.

TWD is the most compatible, as it is the only other YZE game that uses stress dice, but you could probably use some of the critters from their other games as inspiration for space monsters, with little to no messing with the stats needed.

Heart of Darkness or Building Better worlds introduces an enemy that can infect Synthetics and other non-organic things like ships. Just search "Proto-Hive" on the avp wiki. It will give you a preview.

Following that for "Zombie" TWD game by free league works well as others have said. Also Coriolis creatures might be a good options too. I don't have the books myself yet but I hear good things. Also the Abomination and its slight variants in CotG, DoW, HoD, BBW all work rather well zombie/rabid person too.

If you want more homebrewed creatures check out Reddit there are a alot of them out there. I found the spitter last night. I'm not sure on the rules for sharing links outside the forums but just search reddit r/alienrpg "alien spitter" and it should be the first thing that comes up. Can find more on the Unofficial Alien Discord too.
