Various questions

Thu 27 Mar 2025, 14:38

Hi,
I'm new to this game and getting ready to mastering the campaing for the secret of the dragon emperor and having some doubts with the rules that I haven't seen in other threats. The game seem great and, for the good and the bad, fairly simple, sometimes maybe too much that some things are left unexplained.
Could you help me to clarify these doubts?
1- Identifying magical objects. I haven't seen any skill on identifying or detecting magic so I was thinking on using MYTHS & LEGENDS to give players the possibility to identify magical objects and, at least, some hint of what their use may be. How do you handle this?
2- About the HEALING skill, it specifies to be used when HP reaches 0. Wouldn't make sense that HEALING could be also used before HP 0 to heal damage taken? By falls or between fights... Similar to what healing spells do.
3- The healing potion sells for 50 golds. Isn't this very expensive? I find that the game is generous on tools to damage adventurers, wouldn't make sense to allow a bit of healing at an affordable price? And healing potions are usually a must buy for dungeon exploration.
4- The focus objects for magic could be used to change the origin of the spell? For example, throwing the amulet to the floor behind the enemy and launch the spell from behind or writing kind of runes with chalk that could serve as throwing points.
5- Is there a difference on what the different focus objects offer? Chalk is 1 copper and wand is 10 gold, what offers a wand that doesn't offer the chalk?

Thanks in advance for helping!

P.59 Unless stated otherwise, it takes a successful roll against LANGUAGES or any school of magic to identify the spells and be able to use them.

2- About the HEALING skill, it specifies to be used when HP reaches 0. Wouldn't make sense that HEALING could be also used before HP 0 to heal damage taken? By falls or between fights... Similar to what healing spells do.
The Healing skill is used to Saving Life, i.e. on a character that has 0 HP. A successful Healing roll will also recover d6 HP to reflect that the character is no longer dying. If you would allow to use the Healing skill at anytime, then there wouldn't be any need for healing mages, healing potions, stretch rest, shift rest, etc. A simple skill use would do.

3- The healing potion sells for 50 golds. Isn't this very expensive? I find that the game is generous on tools to damage adventurers, wouldn't make sense to allow a bit of healing at an affordable price? And healing potions are usually a must buy for dungeon exploration.
Since it is a bit hard to recover HP during an adventure in a dungeon due to that you can't do more than one stretch rest during a shift and you can't do a shift rest at all on an adventure site. Healing mages or healing potions are and should be valuable. They can change the outcome of a battle. The game also rewards the players with a lot of gold or valuables that they can sell. If healing potions was cheaper, then players will hoard them when they find four books with a value of 100 gold.
4- The focus objects for magic could be used to change the origin of the spell? For example, throwing the amulet to the floor behind the enemy and launch the spell from behind or writing kind of runes with chalk that could serve as throwing points.
You must hold the focus object in your hands in order to use it as such. The focus objects aren't used that much in the core rules. I guess this will change in the upcoming magic book later this year. If you think that your mage starts with a focus item they can't use, just let him start with the focus items value in gold instead or another item that is worth the same amount.

5- Is there a difference on what the different focus objects offer? Chalk is 1 copper and wand is 10 gold, what offers a wand that doesn't offer the chalk?
Focus objects are used with spells that requires it. If a spell just say focus, like the magic trick Light, then, you can use any. Hopefully focus items will covered more in the magic book.

Thank you for the answer and aclarations. Happy to hear that there Will be more insight in Magic.
I missed that box for the 1.
About the healing, my group of players is totally new to TTRPGs and I want them to play whatever they feel comfy with and not push them a mage healer. I'll see how the sessions go and how they handle the adventure and I will adjust the difficulty as they learn.
