[Moved] What constitutes Hope Lost exactly?

Wed 26 Feb 2025, 19:26

So basically I’m looking for some clarification on the rules regarding pushing a roll and Hope loss in The Electric State RPG. I’ve run into a situation where the wording of the rules seems to be a bit ambiguous, and I’d love to hear how others interpret it.

There are two key passages in the rulebook that seem to be creating some confusion:

1. All dice count after the re-roll, including the ones not re-rolled.
2. For each 1 rolled after a push, your current Hope score is reduced by one.

At first glance, these statements seem to contradict each other. The first suggests that all dice (including those from the initial roll) are counted after the push, while the second specifically says that Hope is only reduced by 1s rolled after a push.

Here’s where the question arises: Do 1s from the original roll contribute to Hope loss, or does Hope loss only happen from new 1s rolled during the push?

Example 1:
- I roll 5 dice and get 6, 3, 1, 2, 4.
- I choose to push, re-rolling the 3, 2, and 4, while keeping the 6 and 1.
- My pushed roll results in 5, 2, and 4 (no new 1s).
- Do I lose Hope?

Example 2:
- I roll 5 dice and get 6, 3, 1, 2, 4.
- I push, re-rolling the 3, 2, and 4.
- My pushed roll results in 5, 1, and 4 (one new 1).
- I should lose 1 Hope because I rolled a 1 after pushing.

The question is whether the original 1 should also reduce Hope, or if only newly rolled 1s count.

These are two competing understandings (at least in my head):

1. Interpretation 1 – Only 1s rolled after a push reduce Hope, which is directly stated.
2. Interpretation 2 – Since all dice count after the re-roll, 1s from before the push should also be considered for Hope loss.

My personal view is that Hope should only be lost from new 1s rolled in the push, but others have argued that all 1s should count.

I know this may be a shot in the dark, but would a developer who worked on this game be able to clarify this for us all?

When you push, you don't re-roll dice that show 1 or 6 (i.e. dice with symbols on them, if you have the special dice), but all dice counts after you have pushed. This means that if you roll a 1 on your initial roll, you know that you will loose (at least one) hope if you push.

Example 1:
- I roll 5 dice and get 6, 3, 1, 2, 4.
- I choose to push, re-rolling the 3, 2, and 4, while keeping the 6 and 1.
- My pushed roll results in 5, 2, and 4 (no new 1s).
- Do I lose Hope?
Your final roll is 6 and 1 (from before the push) and 5, 2 and 4. You will get one success loose one hope.
Example 2:
- I roll 5 dice and get 6, 3, 1, 2, 4.
- I push, re-rolling the 3, 2, and 4.
- My pushed roll results in 5, 1, and 4 (one new 1).
- I should lose 1 Hope because I rolled a 1 after pushing.
Your final roll is 6 and 1 (from before the roll) and 5, 1 and 4. You will get one success and you will loose two hope.

Any way to get this confirmed by a dev who worked on this game? I know its a shot in the dark, but was just wondering.

I answer simple rule questions for them. I ping them if the question is more intricate (this question was not). If you aren't happy with my answer, then some devs and writers for the games do visit the forum every now and then (they usually visit only during a beta-phase), some more than others. You can hope for that.
