Play order: Good/bad idea to mix it up?

Wed 08 Jan 2025, 07:03

I'm playing with the idea of getting all the four main books with their compendia and then systematically layering play in the different parallell locations/storylines. The idea is to have each book work as a separate and parallell storyline until they link up, like often is done in a novel. Until the link-up, the players would be left guessing what is going on in terms of whether these are parallell timelines, realities, or geographical locations, until they find out through gameplay.

Maybe something like this:

We play:
  • two zones/missions of Mechatron.
  • four zones/missions of Mutant.
  • more Mechatron.
  • two zones/missions of Genlabs.
  • more Mutant.
  • more Genlabs.
  • introduce Elyseum...
...and so on until two, some, or all of them link up, at which time players are asked to pick one of their PCs and leave the other one(s) at the ark/base/etc.

Once all are played through and linked up, it would be time for The Gray Death.

Is that a cool idea, a way of taking advatage of the full game and the fact that my players are new to MYZ and RPGs? Or is it likely a stupid idea causing extra work and headache for no or little gain...? Buying each book in order would of course be easier on the old wallet...

Feedback from veterans would be greatly appreciated!
