The Society - around the whole time?

Wed 01 Mar 2023, 03:57

I only just started GMing Vaesen and reading some of the adventures all the way through. I ran into something that has me confused and I'm hoping someone can clarify this for me. The core rulebook clearly states that the Society hasn't been around for roughly 20 years (if I remember correctly) and only Linnea is still around. Then I read the adventure The Silver of the Sea. The letter they get asking for help states that the person needing help studied in Upsala some years ago and interacted Society members. So is this a mistake or has the Society been around this whole time?

Easy enough to fix the letter and just say that person heard of the Society, but I'm curious if future adventures will have the same issue and not be as easy to resolve.

I see two possibilities:

a) treat this as an opportunity to introduce someone connected with the society the characters haven't met yet, and let them investigate who this person at the university is. Maybe a future ally, maybe someone who becomes an enemy/adversary?

b) simply correct the letter, and get on with it.

I assume that the chapter of the Society the characters in our campaign are joining is more or less starting from scratch, but there could of course be friends and allies who they simply haven't met yet.
In the end I would always try and go with the solution/the answer that leads to the most fun for you and the people you play with.

Maybe it is simply a mistake by the one who wrote the letter? Maybe they got their facts wrong - people forget and people make mistakes.

Hi,

It is also not very clear to me, but this is what i know:
- There first was the order of Artemis, in the (16th century)
- That was renamed 'the Society' in the 18th century.
- In the late 18th century there was the Oulu massacre where a most people from the society died (except for three)
- In the years after the three recruited new members, but this nog worked very well.
- Olga (a character from 'the nights sow') has left the Society ''20 years ago''.
- The last members left ''10 years ago'' and the castle left to decay

The game starts not in a specific data, only somewhere in the 19th century. I just picked a date myself and made it 1811 when the players are starting the game.
So in my game it is around 1780 when the Oulu massacre happened, 1781 when they recruited new members, 1792 when Olga left, and 1796 when the Society completely stopped and the castle Gyllencreutz was left to decay.
I don't know if this is correct, but it is so vague and my players really want to know the timeline, so i just made this.

The explanation I am using in my game, is that Udggren didn't actually meet with Society members. He actually met with Rosenbergers who were posing as Society members in order to get access to and explore the Castle. He gives the players the names of the two people he met with several times 4 years ago, but the names he gives the PCs are not listed in the Annals.

One of the names is an alias used previously by Olaus Klint.

Another alternative possibility, is that Udggren met with Franzibald Hansen, who has possibly always claimed to be a member of The Society even years after the Society became defunct.

Stuff like this is why I ditched the whole 'Linnea' character from the jump, and went with my own backstory why the PC's are in the Castle.

I have my own background story based on session zero PC creation by my players. Much easier to integrate people that new the previous society members.
