Re: RoS FoundryVTT question

PSA: there is a beta update available to the Core module that fixes most of the issues with D&D 3.0 system.
You can get it by installing directly from manifest: https://github.com/FLPub/symbaroum5ecor ... odule.json
Note, that it's an update to a "system" module, not RoS content modules (PG, GMG, Bestiary) - those are still very outdated and have issues.

Honestly, if Free League is worried about the cost of contracting a developer, I would volunteer to update it myself for free. It is not that much work:
[1] Update classes to use the new automatic advancement system (leveling).
[2] Update races to use a new dedicated race item type instead of being a "feature".
[3] Fix icon paths for spells and features (5e system changed directory for icons).
[4] Updated journals to use new enrichers.
[5] Organize content into folders (a new built-in Foundry feature).

8 months later since I started this thread I think it is safe to say that yes, indeed, the cost for a contractor seems to be the main issue. For those of us that have bought all the modules and now are just dying to get our groups to play the newly released material (Throne of Thorns and World of Symbaroum), which I've also bought, this is all quite unacceptable.

They should, at the very least, withdraw those products from their store. For anyone who purchases them today they will get a very nasty surprise if they just try to install the products they've just purchased. I have bought a new computer and tried to install it all and it fails on the first hurdle (core) and thus refuses to install any of the modules I've purchased.

I notice there is quite a lot of activity for the Free League stuff over on Alchemy VTT, the new "shiny!", so I guess they've moved on and leave us hanging here on Foundry VTT.

Yes. I am bitter by now.

News on this:
There an updated version of the Core RoS for foundry
https://foundryvtt.com/packages/symbaroum5ecore
It supports Foundry V12 and dnd5e v3.3.0+ only (NOT 4.x)

Still no update for the "premium" modules:
- https://foundryvtt.com/packages/symbaroum5eplayersguide (last update 1 year ago) works only with Foundry v11 and DnD 2.3
- https://foundryvtt.com/packages/symbaroum5egmguide (last update 1 year ago) works only with Foundry v11 and DnD 2.3
- https://foundryvtt.com/packages/symbaroum5ebestiary (last update 1 year ago) works only with Foundry v11 and DnD 2.3

I deeply regret buying those modules.

From the discord discussion, the module (core and playbook), are being work on, but there is no date as to when they will be updated, since the programmers are already busy on other projects, and it’s a side job/contract. Also will not be update to the latest version of D&D (4.0), since the work is being done and the previous one (3.5 ?). So, you will have to still downgrade to an earlier version of D&D to function properly. Possibly, someone else will pick it up and work on it to bring it up to be on par, but no guarantees. A shame really, beautiful setting, nice Integration, but even when it first was published, it was behind by a D&D Core version and has never really catch up.

End of the year update

Still no compatibility between PREMIUM modules and foundry v12 (out may 2024 https://foundryvtt.com/releases/12.324)
https://freeleaguepublishing.com/shop/r ... ers-guide/
https://freeleaguepublishing.com/shop/r ... ers-guide/
https://freeleaguepublishing.com/shop/r ... -bestiary/

I'm playing through Copper Crown and Throne of Thorns and I still can't update to v12 to use the modules I paid for.

The core module https://github.com/FLPub/symbaroum5ecore is outdated cause it needs DnD5e System v 3.x, not compatible with DnD 4.x but, at least, it's free and it works on v12

I've asked on discord and "there is a handoff in progress for the ros modules to get them updated for dnd5e 4.1"

For what I gather, they basically need to be rebuild it for the ground-up, and the original author who devlopped the module ( on version 9 d&d 2.0, as 10 and 3.0 was very close to be out) state it was working as is with previous version and was good enough as is, and later on made a few updates ( core convertion for 3.0 dd, version, juste when 4.0.0 dd came up a short few months after) and are now too busy to commit to it . They say they were working on a passing over to other devlopper, have it updated, fully fonctionnal 4.0.0 and sustaining all fututre maintenance/modules. Now as to when, is anyone guess. My understanding, for Foundry Modules, there is no professional working on it, but it's side-job for professional programmer, so it can be difficult to time-manage; and Alchemy does all the module development internally. Here hoping we get something in 2025...

The only problem in this situation are the "premium" modules, which are sold and cannot be used with updated versions of the system and/or Foundry Core. They still sell RoS premium modules at full price

Oh, absolutely, what put salt in the wound is all the other module for Foundry are fully fonctionning and a joy to use, compare to Dragonbane, it's so well done and maintained, RoS really stick out, and that it was never properly updated and maintained, *shrugg* . I will give them this, it is D&D and not a in house system; Forbidden Land, DragonBane, Veasen, etc, they are proprety of Free League, their house system. This being said, the excuse ''Welp, D&D is complicated, the core work on 3.0, and for the rest you can alway install Foundy 9, and it'll work '' to justify the full price is a bit fo a strech, to say the least. But, let's see what 2025 will bring... not holding my breath, but hoping.

Ok, so having the quickest look at the code of how a module is created I made a quick hack to "module.json", so that it at least is possible to enable it in my ongoing campaign. It probably will create a bunch of other issues down the line, this isn't fixing the actual problem, only the symptom, but if anyone else is desperate it might be worth it whilst knowing those trade-offs.

Open the module.json (in the root folder of the module, wherever you have your modules, mine was in "C:\Users\mathi\AppData\Local\FoundryVTT\Data\modules\symbaroum5ecore" on a Win machine) and change the value of "compatibility" (far down in the file) "maxiumum", which has a value of "2.9.9". Change the "2" to a "3", so it says "3.9.9".

It pretty much says that the module is compatible up to that version. Basically lying. But hey, now I can open my world and at least see the content. We will be forced to do todays gaming session completely analogue though as I don't trust all calculations and other tweaks are correct, but now I can at least show the maps I have drawn in Dungeondraft and imported in to FoundryVTT, on the TV we have on our gaming table.

Also, as long as the core module is enabled you can now again go in on every token and pick the correct character sheet, i.e. the old one, which has corruption etc on it.

The downside of doing it like this is that you will not get a notification for when the core module ACTUALLY is updated, as in properly updated, but as that seems highly uncertain right now it might be worth setting a reminder for checking that manually until then, and just keep gaming in the meantime.

THIS WORKS!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much! If any of you think this is hard to do please know it is not and anyone can do it. I also figured out how to make the edit work if you are using the Forge server service for your foundry. At least you get access to your books now.
