Scent of a Killer - question regarding a clue

The lavender smell mentioned in the adventure; what is the clue’s intention? The relevance and link to the culprit seems farfetched. A red herring?

That's no Red Hering, but an indication, that ... the vaesen ... could easily follow this scent.

I needed several read throughs and a diagram, to find out how awesome all clues and hints are placed:

Moderator Action: I changed the link so it only pointed to the diagram, which I think was the purpose. Linking to picture can sometimes be difficult, I've noticed. I don't know why it failed this time, can be a format issue or just a 'nisse' jinxing it.
