Dvice on running games and Playing as cultures on the inside of the world lore from APG

Wed 17 Jul 2024, 19:35

So I’m new to Symbaroum and have read the core book and am now working on the APB and AGMB. I will be running it for a group and wanted to know what you all as GM’s do when your players want to play characters from the Advanced Players Book that are cultural insiders in Davokar in the lore of the game as opposed to the base options that give you flavor of the those cultures but they are outsiders without in-depth knowledge of the world.

I think the original intent of the game was to play as outsiders that have secrets unfold for them but the advanced guide seems to push up against that and threaten to break it.

My natural instinct is to just not allow cultural insiders to be PC’s in my game but if other GMs have found creative ways to make it work I’d love to hear some advise.

What have you done to make that kind of play work in your games?

Do you think the game provides enough lore information for realistic play as a cultural insider or is the lore about the world as structured for the GM in the adventure/sourcebooks only useful for the default play of outsiders learning about this world?

Playing as cultural insiders

I’m sorry the title was an “essay” and will make sure in future that I be respectful of the rules of this forum.

A piece of advise for you. Try to make your asks without the phrasing you used which comes off as passive aggressive and rude.

There were nicer ways to ask me to change my post title.

For example you could have said-“please be aware having over long forum titles makes it challenging for people to understand and respond your message. In future we would appreciate it in future if new posts have short clear co since titles for the consideration of the community. Thank you though for your interest in our games and we always love the discussions in our community”

This.

I simply don't allow those cultures in my campaign. As you say, Symbaroum is thought to have a lot of mysteries for the players and characters alike, and reading through the Advanced Player's Guide reveals a lot of those mysteries. There's a reason why it's called "Advanced" and not "Beginner's" Player.

It can be fun to play those races once your group has already played through a long campaign (could be The Throne of Thorns or some of your own making), discovered already about the other races, and then want to explore it. Like being an Iron Pact cell, for example. Or returning as Undead after a TPK in the original campaing. But first, they need to be simple and ignorant Ambrians, Goblins or Ogres, and discover what Davokar holds inside.
