The rules as written imply that you can not push an unarmed attack in melee because there would be no risk of damaging a weapon but our group was actually split ( I see it as obvious you can’t push ).

My question is can you push an unarmed melee attack yes or no ?

Unarmed attack in melee or throwing rocks is called Improvised attacks (p.9) in this game and even though they don't add gear dice to the roll, you can push them, without risk. The rulebook even say that you should since it is without risk.
