Re: Parrying too weak?

You could always bring back the classic “dodge puts you on the ground unless you dodge with a bane” from Forbidden Lands.

I’m not sure it’s so much of an issue for me. If your weapon skill is higher (plenty likely for many characters) than your dodge, you’ll probably choose to parry (if the situation alllows).

Parrying is an alright niche option sometimes, it's a good thing it isn't its own separate skill though cause it would be pretty hard to justify investing a lot into it. When wearing light or no armor (0 to 4 armor rating) dodging is usually the better option, and when wearing heavy armor (4 to 8 armor rating) an attack has to deal enough damage to hit a good amount through the armor while also not dealing enough damage to break the weapon for it to be worth parrying (without considering the many monster attacks that can't be parried without a shield and a specific heroic ability in the first place). I do think parrying could do with being just a little bit better.

I dont think Parry is too weak from the pov that the skill is "free", you get it with the weaponskill(vapenfärdighet?) you are using as i understand. While dodge?(undvika) is its own skill all together :)

But I agree at the same time shield should have some bonus too it, maybe advantage on parries :)

My group actually think parry is perfectly fine, it’s rather a problem with players being afraid of damaging their weapons, even though they are easily repaired afterwards.

Actually a weapon breaking in a fight when defending a powerful blow has led to some epic battle scenes.

To me, it's not that Parrying is too weak, it's that shields are more or less useless. Shields are a "special case" kind of thing. Ranged and certain monster attacks, that's it.

From a "realistic" POV, shields were used for such a long time, because they are versatile. They can be used to simply close off a whole part of the body for attacks, or they can be used offensively, with shield-bashes and the edges used to control the enemy's weapon.

The simplest way to handle this, would be for shields to provide a bonus on the armor rating, like a helmet. Small shields +2, large shields +4. Carrying a heavy piece of wood and/or metal around should give you something, besides those very special circumstances that may, or may not, come up in a certain adventure.

If I recall correctly parrying with a shield was done with a boon in the beta version, but that was later moved to Shield Block.

One shouldn’t forget that blocking with a shield is much safer than blocking with a weapon, since shields in general have a higher durability, and you don’t risk damaging your weapon in a fight.

I’m not too keen on adding a flat armour bonus, since that would lead to quite a power creep.
