Can one combine normal copyright of a game text and still refer to the FTL?

Fri 20 Oct 2023, 18:50

Hello!
I'm planning on releasing a game text of about 80-100 A4 pages. It will not copy any text verbatim from the SRD, but many ideas will be based on it.
I'm planning to print and publish the book as a publisher would, and am considering putting a normal (c) copyright on the product. Is it still good form to reference the FTL and use its logo (and the disclaimers in the license)?

Would it be different if some sections of the book contains verbatim text from the SRD?

It's definitely good form to do so. Not a lawyer so the usual "random guy on the internet spouting off legal advice" disclaimer applies but I'd at a bare minimum list it as an inspiration even if you're not using the rules mechanically even if rewritten. If the mechanics are mostly the same even if reworded, I'd still include the license personally though I won't pretend to know if you need to if it's rewritten.

You don't need to use the SRD verbatim, but if you want to claim a game as being Year Zero Engine, you need to comply with the FTL, which includes including a link to it.
I make YZE games (https://drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matt%20Kay) and produce predominately Free League content on my YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@3skulls)
