Riddermound

Fri 17 Nov 2023, 11:19

Hey, I kicked off my Dragonbane adventures last night and the party arrived in Riddermound.

It felt to me like the wight as described in room #9 is incredibly difficult to defeat. It can attack with 4d8 almost one shotting PCs, it only takes half damage from non-magical attacks meaning my players are only inflicting 2-3 damage per attack, and it attacks twice per round! In the end I had to "tweak" the wight to take double damage from fire damage to not TPK the party.

I want to check I ran this correctly.
  • The wight has a d6 table, and no skills, so I'm assuming I roll a d6 and it automatically "hits" and therefore I just roll damage per "attack"?
The wight has a ferocity of 2, and so draws two initiative cards?
The wight only takes normal damage from fire spells, and magical weapons?
The wight will fight until "death" where it reforms after a "stretch"

1: yes, but remember that A: you can either choose what attack it will perfrom or roll on the table, B: you can't perform the same attack twice in a row, so can't spam the same attack over and over again, and C: the players can try and dodge (and in the 4d8 attack, parry) the attack to avoid taking damage.

2: yes, they draw an equal amount of initiative cards as their ferocity.

3: i'd rule it as they take normal damage from magic, magical weapons and nonmagical fire (so bashing a torch on its head would work).

4: essentually yes. But worth to point out that while the Wright will fight to the "death", there is nothing stopping your players to retreat out of the Riddermound once they have the treasure. In fact i usually withhold the Wright untill they have looted the crypt. They can stay and fight, but i use it as a "lesson" that sometimes AVOIDING combat is the smarter move.

Hey! That's all really useful. I feel like I maybe should have held back on the Wight in retrospect, but this was my first time running it :)

I had the Wight play cat and mouse with the party to build up tension. The parties Mage got lost in the dark and encountered it all alone. He cast a gust of wind then ran away. Later the Wight slowly pursed the party, dragging it's morningstar on the ground. It also would walk through a wall, to the parties horror. The party quickly figured out that thier attacks were not effective, but saw the Mage's fire atttack damage it, so they armed themselves with torches or flaming arrows.

reteaching players to run is an incredibly useful lesson in a system with autohitting critters
