New world / Campaign a bit more "epic"

Fri 23 Jun 2023, 09:28

Hello everyone,

I played a world / campaign, when I was young, in ADnD 2ed. I wanted to convert it first to 5ed. (Didn't play for like 20 years) After playing a small campaign in 5ed. I realized.... That this system is now basically the superheroes of fantasy worlds... So, no it should be more deadly, then I found PF2 looked good... But didn't feel right. But a few days ago I found Forbidden lands, and holly shit, I'm in love. :)

To convert my old 2ed campaign "recreate" it in Forbidden lands, I would need more magic, gods etc. Basically increase the level from lowish magic fantasy, to high (deadly) fantasy. However, since I just read through the book. Do you have any tips on how to increase and include priests, for example?

Any tips would be cool!

The FL setting and the gamemechanics do NOT promote an inflationary use of magic of any sorts, I do not think that a 1:1 conversion of a D&D setting with lots of gizmos and spell-slinging will work well with FL. Priests are druids, technically, even though you might want to add more Paths from the FL supplements to expand their range of spells.
There are also fan-made conversions around, I am aware of a Dark Sun conversion pack that transfers many D&D classes and spells into FL mechanics, including psionics. It is very special, though, due to its background link. However, many Professions can be adapted into other things, too, just be creative - for example, a Champion can be quite easily re-dedicated into a martial artist type of figure.

Thanks for the reply! Where can I find those fan made content?

Uh, IIRC, I came across the Dark Sun package at Reddit, in a similar discussion like this, and it was shared there by a user via Google Documents or a similar platform. Problem is that Reddit is down at the moment. A Google search for homme-made conversions might yield hints, though.

From another post in this forum, by BrianNZ: https://1drv.ms/f/s!ArMRWhb_Dxr2iJMZp8MPk6UPIj6iDw (password is in this thread: viewtopic.php?t=6166 )

There is also another similar but different Dark Sun adoptation to Forbidden Lands made by discord user/gm SpandexAndy. I was a player in his campaign, which was awesome. FBL is a great match with Dark Sun. PM me for info.

Don't be afraid to mix and match the different profession paths to make new "classes" that fit your setting. The minstrel's Path of the Hymn may fit better with a healer type of character, as an example. Mix Path of the Hymn with Path of the Shield and Path of the Vow and you have a paladin-ish profession. Get Reforged Power from drivethroughrpg for more spells, paths and general talents.

One thing I would do in a more high fantasy/DnD like environment is to reset Willpower on rest. Perhaps to #profession-talent-ranks +1 per point of Empathy and Wits above 2? So with 3 Empathy + 3 Wits and 2 in Stone Song and 2 in Death magic, you start at 6 after every rest, up to a maximum of 10.
Then I would make spells and talents only drain 1 Willpower regardless of how many actual WP you spend on it.
And instead of having your current WP to limit the maximum amount of WP you can spend on an ability, you could use your "profession-talent-rank" instead?
(or replace the Wits for the Empathy if that feels like it makes more sense)

Then as Monsters would go more trivial, you would probably need to increase their Strength and maybe add a couple of base dice to make melee fighters feel the need to dodge and not just rely on armor and taking it down as quickly as possible.
Important NPCs should be given at least 1 "profession-talent-rank" and would then quickly turn deadly.

I would very much reduce the dangers of being reduced to zero Strength to maybe roll twice and take the lowest injury or so. The same would be needed for magical mishaps. A -10 modifier to the rolls would probably suffice, or just ignore any deadly injuries... Yes, maybe even better, just allow players to replace any rolled injuries with a sacrifice. Like lose your head or destroy you armor, what do you choose?

Lots of professions would need changes, like rouges would need ways to damage monsters and so on.
Backstabs could be added though. Like a rouge talent that reads "If an enemy within short range is unaware of you or has one or more of your allies within arm’s length: then after you have hit it, you can spend WP to turn each WP into +1 damage.". It would work with both melee and ranged weapons, making at least have some extra usability compared to warriors and hunters.
