FTL File Formats

Mon 17 Apr 2023, 23:44

Hello! It's great to see the release of the FTL and YZE SRD!

"Free League hereby grants you a worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive right to
copy, use, modify, translate, and distribute the YZE SRD in printed form,
as a PDF ..."

Is the intent here to allow only physical printed form and/or only PDF-formatted electronic files here, or are other text file formats not specially PDF also allowed such as ASCII/Unicode text, HTML, Markdown, MediaWiki, Dokuwiki, PostScript, LaTex, and other human or machine-readable formats?

Any file formats expressly forbidden?

That's a very good point. I have plans to create epub versions of some of my projects, too.
I make YZE games (https://drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matt%20Kay) and produce predominately Free League content on my YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@3skulls)

Another bump.

I actually posted this very question (more or less) in the pinned FTL thread. Just now. So we'll see.

ALFUR: Sure! You can do it! (Statement for encouragement purposes only. You may not actually be able to do it.)

I came to the forums with this very question. It feels at cross-purposes to have a liberal intention for use tied to a very restrictive and explicit rules on file formats.

As pointed out below, it sounds like the SRD material could *not* be freely used in accessible .epub books. Although releasing as VTT is explicitly allowed.

The topic has grown quieter with the publishing of FTL version 1.0, but hopefully there will be an update.

Yes, I would like to know if there are plans to create epub formats, or at least clean pdfs.

As the pdf are, they are unusable on eInk devices beacuse of the background which is a semi=transparent PNG image. Which means I won't buy your books since I just can't read them :S

Providing an ePub format would seriously improve the accessibility for screen readers, eInk readers, etc.

Are there plans to publish to those format and provide a "clean" version?

Thanks, and thank you for your work, though I can't really appreciate it without being able to read it. :D
This post and subforum is for 3rd party products using FL's license, so your question isn't really best placed here. Best look at a specific rulebook and ask for an epub version in that game's sub-forum.

Perhaps an easy solution for FL could be to allow "downloadable eBook formats" and specifically restricting formats or use cases they don't want...

Would be interesting to see how some of the other new open licenses (released since the D&D OGL fiasco) have worded this aspect of their licenses.

Yes, you are completely right. I'm sorry about this unrelated post. I spent a couple of hours cleaning those transparent backgrounds and I was probably too tired and hasty when reading this.

Very good point -- I added OGL 1.0a, ORC, and CC-BY to the main FTL thread. OGL 1.0a doesn't place any restrictions, and ORC and CC-BY are explicit that any format is fine
