Earlier type Bison freighter stats

Mon 20 Mar 2023, 12:32

I was wondering if anyone here has come up with ways to implement the stats for earlier Bison freighters? In the manual it says that:

“Newer models like the G have more sophisticated FTL packages and communications suites than the older B and D models, but their internal and external configurations are mostly the same.”

So for the difference in FTL you can just make them slower, but how would you, gameplay-wise, make the communications suite less sophisticated? Thought of requiring comtech rolls, but that might bring unexpected issues with stress and stunts. Just a flat 2d6, fail on a 2(-4)? I feel like there’s more interesting ways to do this that I as a novice GM can’t think of right away.

Any of you have ideas/done this already?

I would say ...

no FTL communication system so no deep space communication.

maybe you can threat it like a downgrade from BISON (class-M) to CORVUS (class-G) so going from FTL = 8-12 to a FTL = 16-20 (just for the FTL drive),
with standard Saturn J-3000 engines (FTL=20).

you may add an upgrade if you install the powerful Rolls-Royce N66 Cyclone engines (FTL=16).

Yes, for FTL speeds I was going with a simple increase of 2 per model, seems realistic enough and keeps it simple.

By no deep space communication do you mean when outside the frontier you’d have 0 Comms, or any time they’re in transit between systems? The last one would seem a bit harsh? But maybe I can tie it to being outside/inside the frontier + inside established space, yeah

For deep space communication, just choose a limit of parsecs by model.

I would say old models have a 8-12 parsecs limit for deep space communication.

New model can go 16-20 parsecs limit for deep space communication.

it's a easy "reverse" rule of the FTL drive.

Ooh yeah that’s kinda clever, ‘reversing’ the FTL rating. I’ll probably go with that, thanks!
