I've been looking at this map as I've been considering running this for my company. What are the two circles in what looks to be The Old Forest? The book says "...just a few circles for towns..." but I'm not aware of any towns on that side of the river...

It looks like they represent Buckland? The Hobbit settlements between the east bank of the Brandywine and the Old Forest.

You are right! It's so obvious I'm not sure why I didn't see it before!

It looks like they represent Buckland? The Hobbit settlements between the east bank of the Brandywine and the Old Forest.

Actually I don't think they do represent Buckland, if the circles next to the crossroads represent Bree, then those hills above the 2 circles would be the South Downs, which means that they are just towns made for the supplement. The Chetwood is also on the wrong side of the road.

Remember that dwarven maps are oriented with East at the top, so this map had been rotated so that North is at the top.

With that in mind, the 3+1 circles are Bree + Staddle or Chetwood, and the two circles are in Buckland.

Oh! I see what you mean, I never realized dwarf maps were oriented in that manner. I just thought the map had been drawn by a slightly dense Hobbit.

Based on this map from Tolkien Gateway, I think it is Buckland. I thought it was on the other side of the river but if you look at the location of The Old Forest, Bucklebury Ferry, and the placement of The Hedge, it makes sense. Frodo and the other Hobbits had to cross Bucklebury Ferry to cross into Buckland and then into The Old Forest. The northern circle is probably Bucklebury and the southern one is Standelf.
