Monster: Lich

Fri 10 Feb 2023, 15:14

Well I need a Lich, so I created one.
Suggestions are welcome, since I am unsure about HP and Ferocity.

Lich

A Lich is an undead spirit of an archmage. Like wights they are powerfull and have a will of their own and are corporeal. Unlike wights they are not
bound to a place. Instead they are bound to a gem containing their lifeforce.

Ferocity 2
Movement 10
Armor None
HP 35

Resistance Takes half damage from nonmagical Weapons, double Damage from Fire based Attacks
Typical Gear Robe, Magical Staff, a gem containing his lifeforce (normaly hidden somewhere near)
Special Cannot be killed permanently unless the gem containing his lifeforce is destroyed. If killed and the gem is not destroyed, he will raise after a stretch
Persuadable Unlike other monsters, lichs can usually be PERSUADED, albeit with a bane on the roll. To do so, the players must have something to offer that
the Lich wants.

Magical gem: Durability 15

Monster Attacks

1) Death Wail: The undead face contorts into a horrible grimace and lets out a scream that chills the soul of all adventurers within 10m. All of them suffer a
fear attack.

2) Lighning Bolt: The Lich casts a lightningbolt causing 2d8,2d6,2d4 damage (like the spell). The Lich itself is never hit by his own lighningbolt.

3) Control Mind: The lich glares at a player character within 10 meters and takes full control of the victim’s body. The player character must make a WIL roll
with a bane (not an action). If it fails, the victim must immediately make a movement and perform an action of the lich’s choice,
except any action that requires spending WP. The victim also loses their next turn and is scared.

4) Magical Shield: The Lich summons a magical shield which decreases the next damage by 2d6.

5) Nightmarish Sleep: The Lich points at a player and mumbles powerful words. The player must succeed with a WIL roll or fall
into a deep sleep full of nightmares for one stretch and gets scared. If the roll succeeds, the victim still gets Dazed.

6) Hand of dead: The Lich raises its hand and gestures at the nearest player character within 10 meters, who is thrown 2D4 meters away and lands prone.
The attack inflicts the same amount of damage and cannot be dodged.

Should add some more health.
Judging from his move table i am guessing he is intended as a low level enemy.
(purge spell would really shine against this guy)

I like the spirit gem gimmick, as that offsets his low health a bit (along with the shield and damage resistance). Also, I can see this guy trying to stay way back out of combat as much as possible, so he shouldnt be soaking up loads of damage.
I'd love to see some more "commander" type abilities in his attacks, like raising skeletons to help him, or summoning a wall of bones to block player movement or something.

I thought about raising skeletons as well. Maybe I should replace "Death Wail" or maybe better the "Lighning Bolt" with something like

Raise Dead:
Summons four(?) Skeletons (2 Warriors, 1 Champion, 1 Archer).

But maybe this will be to hard?

I'd just do something simple like D3 skeleton warriors (and leave other baddies in the fight up to the DM), and maybe swap it out for the throw-attack (every monster and their dog has a throw attack)

I think he could do with a smidge more health (like lower 40ies) but otherwise i think the fact you gotta destroy his soul gem and that he is resistant to basic physical attacks pretty decent.
Some of the attacks could have some tweeks though

2: Lightning Bolt would have a range of 40m like the spell.(So you don't need to look up the spell in the spell chapter)

4: Considering monsters can spend one of their turns to evade/parry attacks with a skill value of 15, and thus take no damage, this one feels feels a bit meek. Perhaps instead it could be.
"The Lich Summons a Magical Shield to defend itself. The Lich gains an armor value equal to 5 until the start of it's next turn, and the next attack made against it is done with a bane"

As with it raising skeletons, perhaps it could have an special ability for it. Here is a spitball take (Perhaps not the best balanced, more to get the general idea out)

Raise Skeletons:
The Lich can raise and command the dead. As an Action the Lich can reanimate can target a number of corpses or skeletons equal to the result of a D4+2 roll. These bodies rises up with their flesh and organs dissolving, becoming Skeleton Warriors. If the Lich can devote its time to it, it can spend a stretch to raise 2d6 skeletons, and 3d10 skeletons on a Shift. Once it has used this ability, the Lich must wait at least a stretch to raise either a d4+2 or 2d6 skeletons, or a shift to raise 3d10 skeletons to be able to do it again.
The Lich can raise Skeletons in combat as well. At the start of the next round, they are delt an Initiative card, as they spend the turn they are raised reanimating. While Mindless, the skeletons are protective of their master and will attempt to stand between it and those who would do them harm.
Beware the fey!
