Dragonbane BETA Rulebook Feedback - Chapter 4 Combat & Damage

Wed 30 Nov 2022, 11:47

Hi!

Please use this thread to post feedback and report any typos or errors in chapter 4 of the BETA PDF of the Rulebook Dragonbane. Guidelines to remember:
  • Before reporting an error, please check and see if it already has been reported, and if so, don't report it again.
  • If you feedbacked on something in the Quickstart but it's not changed in the BETA, it's not because we missed it - it's because we made a different assessment. (Typos are a different thing.)
  • Please report your feedback no later than January 31.
Thank you!

Page 43, Free attack.

The following two questions emerged from playtesting using the quick start rules and are not clarified by the beta rules. Please clarify the effects in the rules.

"If you are standing within 2 meters of an enemy and then move away from that enemy," is moving within the 2 meters "zone of control" of an enemy considered "move away"? if yes, a move from one square adjacent to an enemy into an adjacent square also adjacent to the same enemy would trigger a free attack, if not, characters can run around enemies without triggering the free attack, only triggering the free attack upon finally leaving the ZOC, if they do that at all.

"the enemy immediately gets to perform an additional melee attack against you" how often does the enemy get a free attack against the same moving character, and against other characters in the same round? One attack per "move away" and again for each moving character? For all characters moving away, but only once per character moving? Only once per round?

During playtest, I ruled that every move from a ZOC square, even if it is into another square of the same ZOC, triggers a free attack, and there are no limits on free attacks for the enemy, which, by moving the enemy close to the room exit, took a hefty toll on the fleeing player group needing to pass through multiple ZOC squares to leave the room. It felt too powerful. But was it intended?

Page 43, "If you succeed your attack counts as surprising, which means that you automatically get initiative card #1."

This seems to contradict or at least has a different wording than page 41, Surprise: "If you perform an attack that the GM deems surprising to your enemy, you get to choose any initiative card you want in the first round of combat."

Or is there a difference between a "surprise attack" and a "sneak attack" I do not understand? The rules seem redundant and could either be merged into one or need more explanation to differentiate between them.

Page 45, "On the grid map you need to be positioned in a square adjacent to the enemy."

Same question as above, does "adjacent" include or exclude squares connected diagonally?

Page 52 - Shift Rest.
"Shift Rest: A Shift rest lasts one full Shift and can only
take place in a safe location where there are no enemies
nearby. During a long rest ..." <- for consistency should read "Shift Rest", also to avoid sounding too much like D&D 5e...

Page 45, "Your weapon inflicts double damage, excluding the damage bonus."

How are other boni included or excluded from doubling, e.g. for standing vs. prone (+D6) or from Heroic Abilities like Dragonslayer (+D8)?

The rules should be more explicit here and take all the factors introduced in the rulebook into account.

Same question for page 49 regarding ranged combat.

Page 54, SLEEP DEPRIVATION: "You also lose D6 WP each Shift you remain awake. If you reach zero HP while suffering from sleep deprivation, you collapse and sleep for at least one Shift, and cannot be woken."

I am sure, this should read "You also lose D6 WP each Shift you remain awake. If you reach zero WP while suffering from sleep deprivation, you collapse and sleep for at least one Shift, and cannot be woken."

(WP to zero instead of HP)

Improvised Weapons:

Would like to see other non-combat skills beyond Bushcraft to be skill checks to use these great little abilities.

One example in the book would be nice.

Page 45 - Shove

Do you shove instead of doing damage or is it an addition to damage done?
If you shove a person do you also move with the target or is it only the target that moves 2 m?
