[Moved] Fighter Pilot campaign, yes? But how?

Ahoyhoy, star sailors.

I've just seen Top Gun: Maverick and found it to be better than it has any business being; in short, I loved the silly thing. ...and now I'm inspired to try and conceive some sort of fighter pilot (mini-)campaign for Alien RPG. The problem is that my group and I are not that into action stuff, but I feel that putting PCs in the cockpit pretty much ensures that combat is most of what such a game would be. So... I'm curious, do anyone have any experience with GMing those kinds of stories? (In Alien or any other RPG) Any tips and thoughts on such fighter craft games?

If you really enjoyed "Top Gun: Maverick" then just play this instead...

Hornet Leader: Carrier Air Operations

If you really do decide to roleplay it then you should borrow some ideas from this game at least, and from other sources, as shown below...
  • Planning and training for the mission is half the fun.
  • Evading attacks with barrel rolls etc. costs you Stress.
  • Flying high exposes you to AA missiles but flying low exposes you to ground fire.
  • Long range missions cause Stress.
  • Pilots with too much Stress are grounded as unfit to fly.
  • BVR (Beyond Visual Range) weapons are great but you might have orders to visually identify all targets or fire only if fired upon.
  • Flying higher and faster than your opponent is a big advantage.
  • Coming out of the sun to "bounce" your opponent is a big advantage.
  • Defensive measures like ECM pods are great but reduce your loadout.

I think it fits better in the GM sub-forum, as this is really a question about how to run these kinds of campaigns, but I have nothing against it being in the General sub-forum instead. Doesn't really matter that much :)
