Marvelous Artifacts and Wondrous Items

Tue 17 May 2022, 05:32

I’m a little confused about the rules for these. The core book reads:

“The bearer of a Marvellous Artefact or Wondrous Item gains (2d) when making rolls using the Skill correspond- ing to its Blessing, and allows the Player-hero to achieve a magical success (see page 21).”

Page 21 reads:

“Player-heroes possessing a magical talent or artefact can spend 1 point of Hope before a Skill roll to achieve a Magical success — that is, to pass their action automatically, regardless of the Target Number.”

So, do you need to spend a point of Hope to use the item and gain the 2d? Doesn’t the action automatically succeed? Is the 2d just to add to the d6’s used to determine degree of success?

They always grant you +2d6, just like an useful item, only better. Then you decide, if you want to spend Hope for a magical success.

Note that you may always roll the d6s to get the quality of the success as stated in page 21 of the core rules.

Cheers!

So if you spend Hope on this case it is just a magical success, rather than an extra 1d6? Can you be inspired and spend Hope to get and additional 2d6 for 4d6 total?

It's not clear in the rules, but I think you can spend 1 hope for any of those effects. If you want both, I would let the player spend 2 points of hope, but I see a very limited use of this case.

I can’t check the rules right now, but i think you only can spend 1 Hope for a given roll.

So spending 1 Hope for a magical success is okay, then you roll the success dice (+2d6) to see, if you get additional 6s.

Or you spend a Hope point fir plus 1d (or 2d if inspired), then you add the 2d for your artifact.

I think you refer to what's stated in page 20:

It is not possible to spend multiple Hope points to gain multiple bonus Success dice

However, as I said, it's not clear as the sentence only limits hope expenditure to 1 for the purpose of getting bonus dice. At the end, I think it's up to you as a LM to allow multiple hope points for different effects, although I don't see much use for the case (magical result AND bonus dice in the same roll).

I mean, the only thing that make sense is, if you want to fish for more extra 6s. Otherwise you already have your magical success and +2d6 from your artifact. As a LM I'd say, okay, enough is enough. ;)
