Adventure Template

Wed 23 Feb 2022, 16:41

Is there anyone who has put out a template for adventures, with formatting similar to how they are published in the 1e/2e books?

I have a template of sorts that I use for my written adventures. I've based it on the published 1E adventures. Alas, this is no finished, professional looking template, this is just the bare bones stuff to structure your writing.

TITLE

When: Text

Where: Text

What: Text

Why: Text

Who: Text

ADVENTURE PHASE
This adventure is divided into x parts.
Part One – Title of part
Short description
Part Two – Title of part
Short description
Part Three – Title of part
Short description
Etc.

INTRODUCTION
Text

PART ONE – Title
Text
Sub-heading where needed
Text

For enemies, I use the following:

Name
Description

Attribute level: 5
Endurance: 22 Hate: 5 Parry: 4+2 Armour: 3d+4

Skills: Personality ♦♦, Movement ♦♦♦, Perception ♦♦, Survival ♦♦, Custom ♦, Vocation ♦
Weapon Skills: Sword ♦♦♦
Special Abilities: Commanding Voice.
Distinctive Features: Boastful, Ambitious
Specialities: Snide remarks

Weapons:
Sword Damage 5, Edge 10, Injury 16, Called Shot: Disarm.

And possibly bookended by one or both of the following:

Epilogue – Title (if a title is desired)
Text

FELLOWSHIP PHASE
Text

This helps a lot, thank you! Do you use any special fonts? I've been using Ringbearer for titles, but the rest of the text is standard Ariel.

Not really no, I've just been using some of the standard Word fonts, Cambria, etc. But I've never actually self-published anything either, so I haven't had to finalise any layout. My one foray into publication has been in an issue of Other Minds Magazine and the layout there was handled by the editor of the magazine, so I just sent my text in Word-format to him and he worked his magic.

Update: The main text font for The One Ring appears to be Alois. Combined with the Ringbearer font for titles and headers, it works pretty well.

Alois is the main font used for 1st edition, but I find it works best for me (and I have the font). If you want the specific 2nd edition fonts, you'll have to do a bit more work to get them.

So, in case anyone is interested, the fonts used in the 2nd edition rulebook PDF (per File --> Properties --> Fonts) are:
  • Aniron
  • BaskOldFace
  • Helvetica
  • Kalam
  • Kereru
  • MinionPro
  • NewBaskerville
  • NiveauGrotesk
  • ZapfDingbats
For comparison, the fonts used in the 1e rulebook PDF are:
  • aaaor
  • aaatord (this appears to be the specific symbols for Gandalf, Eye of Sauron, and Tengwar)
  • Alois
  • Arial
  • Ardagh
  • LibraBT
  • scroll1
  • Stonehenge
  • TengwarAnnatar
  • Tolkienesque
  • Wingdings2

I'm not sure how C7 or FL render the Eye of Sauron, the Gandalf Rune or the Tengwar symbol, but I use the aaatord font. It's free to download if you search for it. Hope that helps - Tim
