How do you go about placing major scenario sites?

Fri 01 Apr 2022, 11:07

One of the difficulties I have is the placement of campaign scenario sites when I first got FL I thought these would be pre-placed or through the use of the journey table.

How do/did go about the placement of these sites?

Either 1) read about them and figure out where they make the most sense based on their physical descriptions and the kind of stuff going on in them. (Anthing to do with Zytera and the Rust church makes the most sense in the west. Amber's peak in the northern center of the east.) You kind of need to compare the racial population map with the base map geography with the sites description and the places that are already named.

2) Google where others have already done that and see someones layout that makes sense to you.

I found a map of someones ravens Purge and I printed it up with my own annotations for adding in some Spire of Quetzel and Mellifed Mage sites.

I, as in the GM:
  1. Skimmed through all official adventure sites plus lots of adventure ideas from the forum, from DriveThruRPG and from Trilemma (these mostly as ideas, as a lot of the high fantasy stuff needs to be toned down a lot).
  2. Placed them all on the map. I tried for look at good location other had used, and what in general felt right to me. Here is my version: https://imgur.com/a/TVvgnlj
  3. Looked at players races and backstories and tried to give them all at least one relative or so at different not too far away locations. Example: An orc had a village destroyed and was captured, was kind of saved by the other PCs, and they escaped together (the reason for there being an Orc in the party). The Orc know he had a sister wedded away in Eye of the Rose, and knew the forest it was located in, but not more than that... he also knew the location of another PCs father, without that PC knowing where his father was. But that fact has not even come up yet, but probably will in the future.
  4. Placed the PCs at a good location given how they knew each other, and gave them some lead to an adventure site. The PCs already had some other leads, so started of by discussing where they wanted to go.. meet the sister? get help from the village another PC was born in? seek out that scary looking castle at the horizon? or try to find that village they had heard a rumor about..? I also let them meet Merigall to give them some grander long term quest/plot ideas.
  5. The PCs then traveled in a direction up to them. I asked them after every session of what they intended to do the next session and only thoroughly read up on locations in their vicinity/direction of travel.

Could you list the site coordinates as I can't make which site goes where?

I did:
The Hollows T33 (played)
Weatherstone I32 (played)
Vale of the Dead O28 (played)
Grindbone N11
Ravenhole C24 (but will probably not play)
Amber's Peak G20 (played)
Eye of the Rose U44
Pelagia Am30
Stonegarden F29 (played)
Soneloom Mine D11 (currently playing)
Haggler's House X15
Vond H39

It's by no means perfect, but works with my campaign and the descriptions make some sense in each location. Maybe you can use it as an inspiration and work from there :).

I placed the following sites here. They are listed in the order we played them.
The Hollow (GMs Guide) Q36
Weatherstone (GM's Guide) U44
Gravyard of Thunder (Spire of Quetzel) O28
The Hexenwald (Spire of Quetzel) Aa36
The Stoneloom Mines (Raven's Purge) Y30
Amber's Peak (Raven's Purge) Ah21
Stonegarden (Raven's Purge) M4
The Vale of the Dead (GM's Guide) W42
Vond (Raven's Purge) H39

These sites where placed (given rumours to the players about them) but not played.
Eye of the Rose (Raven's Purge) P25
Grindbone (Raven's Purge) Z17
Haggler's House (Raven's Purge) P47
Pelagia (Raven's Purge) Am26
Ravenhole (Raven's Purge) F15

We never played the other two sites from the 'Spire of Quetzel' book or the four sites from the 'Crypt of the Mellified Mage' book and since I didn't handed out rumours about them, I never placed them.
