Damage when incapacitated

Thu 30 Dec 2021, 17:54

If a character takes damage when already incapacitated do they die? Do they suffer a critical hit? Do they make an immediate death save? The rules are pretty vague here aside from the rules on killing a defenseless human in cold blood.

I think you need to look at page 73 of the players manual....

KILLING BLOW
A person who is incapacitated by damage is defenseless. If it’s a human being
and you want to kill them outright, you must fail an EMP roll (roll one base
die only). If the roll succeeds, you simply cannot force yourself to commit
the deed. Even if the roll fails and you do kill the victim, you suffer 1 point
of stress – killing in cold blood is not easy. If you have the Killer specialty
(page 49) you can kill defenseless enemies without these negative effects.

Seems like if you fail the EMP roll you kill them out right but take 1 stress. Personally love this mechanic..it is a failure to to kill a helpless person :)

The killing blow rule is for situations when you directly want to attack (and kill) a defenseless person. You can technically get more critical injuries even though you are incapacitated (by random with an area effect weapons for example).

I saw that. I was more wondering about things like an incapacitated character being in the blast radius of an explosive or mauled by a bear or other such unfortunate situation.

I'd count Critical Hits but ignore ordinary damage (assuming they are already at zero health).
