Algarod's Undead Army.

Thu 24 Dec 2020, 20:58

My players freed Algarod from Therania's influence when visiting Weatherstone. They managed to leave Weatherstone unharmed.

Algarod is now planning to expand in the Forbidden Lands. As it's placed not far from there, I plan on having him attack The Hollows to gain control over all the undead there and refill his tanks.

Three questions I'm struggling with:

1) How large a force could he muster for the attack?
2) How could he generate more troops? The basic Raise Undead spell doesn't last long enough (hence the Restless Dead appeal at The Hollows)
3) Would there be undead sorcerer or would he need to recruit a living one? If so what would prevent the sorcerer from taking control of Algarod?

Cheers and happy holidays!

These are great questions, as my party has awoken Algarod, and I have little faith that they are going to be able or willing to stop him and his men from leaving Weatherstone.

1) As far as numbers, I am estimating that Weatherstone has around 100 troops.

2) Being undead himself, You could easily handwave that Algarod has the ability to attract and raise undead as he goes. Perhaps his armies grow by 1D6 soldiers for every wilderness hex he travels, and 2D10 soldiers everytime he passes a near a settlement. Much more if they manage to slaughter a settlement. You know. Winter King style.

3) I would make it possible, but very difficult for a sorcerer to take control of Algarod. Therania did it, but had to place a shard of her soul into the painting to maintain control of him. Perhaps Power Level 5 Raise the Dead.

Thanks for those answers! They help confirming and refining what ideas I had. I think I will run with them mostly as is.

My players will soon be reminded that ignoring a threat they unleashed on the Forbidden Lands doesn't make it just disappear :)
